Manola "Nodi' Burchell, high school grad at age 85

Manola "Nodi" Burchell put the highest priority on education.

In fact, she was greatly embarrassed that her own education was interrupted during the Great Depression, when she was forced to drop out of Notre Dame Academy to go to work to support her family.

That made her determined to give her five children the educational opportunity she had missed. Each attended college; two of her sons graduated from medical school and went on to become doctors in Northern Kentucky.

In 1998, her children repaid the favor, arranging to send her back to her former high school for her senior year at the age of 83. Mrs. Burchell finally graduated from Notre Dame in May of 1999 after a 69-year absence.

"The sisters and the girls were so good to her and didn't treat her like an outsider, " said Judy Bloom, a daughter. "She looked at her album every day and showed people the album and clippings from the paper."

Persistent health problems, including pneumonia, a broken knee and a heart attack, failed to keep Mrs. Burchell from her lifelong dream of graduating and enjoying her long-delayed senior year, even dancing at her senior prom in 1999.

Manola "Nodi" Burchell, 85, of Fort Mitchell, died of natural causes Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell, and the church's senior citizen group. Her husband, Eugene Burchell, died in 1997.

Besides her daughter, survivors include sons, Dr. Eugene J. Burchell Jr. of Edgewood and Dr. Del Burchell of Lakeside Park; daughters, Suzanne Bush of Edgewood and Linda Kenning of Villa Hills; a brother, Donald Cooper of Fort Mitchell; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Returning to high school helped ease her mother's pain at losing her husband, said Ms. Bloom.

"Education was important to her, and Notre Dame was always important to her in particular, " Ms. Bloom said.

That's why Mrs. Burchell requested before her death that all memorials in her name be donated to the Notre Dame Academy General Scholarship Fund, 1699 Hilton Drive, Park Hills, Ky. 41011. Memorials are also suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
