Intellectual Hilma Edwards, 'soft-spoken, sweet mother'
Hilma Edwards may have been allergic to the sun, but she had a way of brightening everyone's day.
Her condition forced her to stay indoors, but Ms. Edwards took the opportunity to spend time with her friends and six children.
If anyone had a problem, Mrs. Edwards wouldn't make an issue out of it - unless she was asked for her help.
"She was a soft-spoken, sweet mother, " said a son, Donald L. Edwards of Palm Harbor, Fla. "But if you wanted her help, there's nothing she wouldn't do for you.
Hilma Julia Phelps Edwards, 80, of Florence, died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.
She was a retired employee of Durkee Foods, Cincinnati. A son, Edwin D. Edwards, preceded her in death.
A deeply religious woman, Mrs. Ed wards was a supportive member ofthe New Hope Baptist Church in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Edwards was described by family members as an intellectual, mostly because she spent most of her spare time reading. While all topics were of interest, her favorite books dealt with history and nature, especially birds. She was also an ardent fan of country music.
Other survivors include sons, Lonnie R. Edwards of Fort Mitchell and Daniel W. Edwards of Florence; a daughter, Judy K. Lee of Crestview Hills; a brother, Robert S. Phelps of Florence; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Family members said they especially thanked Dan Edwards for his care of Mrs. Edwards when she took ill.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Ursula Evelyn Baker, 69, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Grants Lick, died Saturday.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Baker of Mount Vernon; sons Dennis Baker of Grants Lick and Gary Baker of Nashville, Tennessee; daughters, Beverly Hoskins of Dry Ridge and Kimberly Lowery of Broadhead; brothers, Junior McNew of Cold Spring, Vernon McNew of Cincinnati, Clyde Warren McNew of Middletown, Ohio; sisters, Bernice Cummins of Broadhead, Myrtle Halcomb of Richmond, Indiana, Doris Meyers of Cold Spring, Edna Mae Chalk of Alexandria; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday at the Pine Hill Holiness Church in Pine Hill. Burial is in Briar Field cemetery in Orlando.
Alexandria Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Catherine P. Barry Blank, 75, of Covington, died at 6:55 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Albert A. Blank, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Judy A. Blank and Margie S. Blank, both of Covington, and Patti B. Baker of Richmond; a sister, Margie Applegate of Maysville; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:25 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Barb Collier, 64, of Kenton Hills, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Donald B. Combs, 66, of Warsaw, died Thursday at his home.
He was a maintenance engineer with Crescent Tube Co. and a Navy veteran.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be private. Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati is handling arrangements.
Jeff Feldkamp, 47, of Tacoma, Wash., died June 8 in Tacoma.
He was a musician and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Amy Feldkamp of Bellevue; a son, Brad Feldkamp of Highland Heights; his parents, Joan Volpenhein of Southgate and James Feldkamp of Cincinnati; sisters, Melanie Chalk of Southgate, Stephanie Hayden of Park Hills and Lisa Steffen of Fort Thomas.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
John V. Gallagher, 56, of Lakeside Park, died Thursday at his home.

Douglas A. Horseman, 79, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired employee of NCR, a member of Alexandria United Methodist Church and Disabled American Veterans, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel L. Horseman; a daughter, Bonita Olson of London, England; brothers, Herbert Horseman of Waynesville, Ohio, and Ben Horseman of Cleveland; a sister, Virginia Spencer of Lewisburg, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home, Waynesville. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Xenia, Ohio.

James Johnson, 70, of Las Vegas, formerly of Fort Thomas, died May 30 in Las Vegas.
He was a retired fork lift operator with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Johnson; a son, James Johnson III; sisters, Dalphane Johnson of Las Vegas, Joyce Vaughn of Independence, Norma Jean Turner of Jackson, Shirley Fehr of Morning View and Janice Minnich of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in St. Stephen Cemetery, Southgate.

Earl Gay McFarland Jr., 54, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Samuel Joseph Monce, 71, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at his home.
He was an industrial accountant for both private businesses and the Internal Revenue Service, a member of the Tiffin, Ohio, Masonic Lodge and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Mallandain Monce; sons, Michael Monce of Cincinnati, Kevin Arthur Monce of Carthage, N.C., Christopher Mark Monce and Robert Charles Monce, both of Erlanger; a brother, Leonard Monce of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Delores Judd and Mary Grace Piedel, both of Middletown, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday, with Masonic services at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodside Cemetery, Middletown.

Barney Wayne Newberry, 59, of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died June 3 in Peoria.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Newberry; daughters, Kathleen Morris, Rhonda Hernandez and Stephanie Bowden, all of Peoria; a son, Ricky Newberry of Avondale, Ariz.; sisters, Virgie Bezold of Melbourne, Penny Bezold and Peggy Hulley, both of California; brothers, Ray Newberry and Jerry Newberry, both of Newport; and eight grandchildren.
Services were June 8 in Phoenix. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.
Kimberly Fields Osborne, 37, of Maysville, died at 11:07 p.m. Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her parents, Libby and Joe Fields Jr. of Maysville; a brother, Mike Hamm of Maysville; and a sister, Penny Bellew of Maysville.
