Joseph Maschinot, 78, trumpet player
Newport has lost its best trumpet player, according to Gary Maschinot.
Joseph Robert Maschinot, 78, died of a massive heart attack shortly after meeting a friend at the Dayton International Airport Monday. He played in a well-known wedding band called the Velvetones and was, to his son's ears, the finest trumpet player in the area.
"He was the only person I met in my life who loved playing music and did it ... until the day he died, " Gary Maschinot said. "In fact, he played last weekend in Belleview at the Stonehenge Lounge.
"He had a job for this weekend and for the next two weekends. He just would not quit."
Mr. Maschinot served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific, his son said, where he was a driver for many high-ranking officers, including Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz. After the war, Mr. Maschinot was a sales manager for 23 years at Best Furniture, selling TVs and other innovations in the 1950s. His son said Charlie Best, the store's founder, said his father was such a successful salesman that he could no longer afford to pay him a commission, so he made him a partner in the business instead.
In 1975, Mr. Maschinot founded Maschinot's Guitar and Drum City in Newport.
Survivors include another son, Joseph R. Maschinot of Eau Claire, Wis.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
