Thomas Slattery, a gentleman for life
Thomas F. Slattery was the embodiment of the perfect gentleman in just about everything he did.
From his assistance to fellow farmers as a Mason County Soil Conservation Supervisor to his insistance that his two daughters not have to work the fields of his farm, he tried to ease others' loads.
"He did a lot for the community, but he did it very quietly, " said his daughter, Martha Tierney. "He was not a loud, outspoken person. He was always quietly, behind the scenes trying to help .... He was very much of a gentleman."
Mr. Slattery, 91, of Maysville, died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday at Maysville Extended Care Center.
Ms. Tierney said her father instilled in his daughters a strong work ethic through his daily example. He not only worked his 80-acre Mason County farm, but also 100 acres of his father's farm as well.
Likewise, he stayed active in all manner of local farming organizations.
Mr. Slattery was a former Mason County Soil Conservation supervisor, a director and past president of Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. and a member of the board of the local Southern States cooperative.
His daughter said his involvement stemmed from his love of farming.
"He just liked working in the dirt, to be blunt about it, " said Ms. Tierney. "He loved the outdoors and being able to produce something out of the ground."
