Edward Arnsperger, art, English teacher
Edward Donald Arnsperger, 65, of Independence, a 34-year veteran art and English teacher at Cincinnati Public Schools, died Friday of a heart attack.
Mr. Arnsperger was an artist, worked in the family construction business, and was former manager of the Taylor Mill Swim and Tennis Club.
He also coached youth basketball teams for a number of years, was a history buff, a nature lover, and an usher at Calvary Baptist Church in Latonia.
"I don't think you realize until a person like Edward is gone just how involved he was, " said his wife, Shirley.
"He was one heck of a guy who was loved by so many people. He just pulled people into him."
The Arnspergers would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary today.
Mr. Arnsperger taught at numerous high schools, middle schools and grade schools in the Cincinnati Public Schools system.
He began teaching English, but spent most of his career teaching art. He was an accomplished artist himself.
"He especially enjoyed painting landscapes, " said Mrs. Arnsperger. "He worked in oils and acrylics, but loved watercolors."
Several of his paintings were sold, others were given to friends, and some are displayed in the family home.
During summers while he was going to college, Mr. Arnsperger worked at his uncle's construction company, helping build houses. More recently, he worked in construction with his son, Steven's, firm, Arnsperger Construction Co.
Mr. Arnsperger had heart bypass surgery 12 years ago, but remained active.
"He wasn't going to sit back in a chair, " said Mrs. Arnsperger. "He often said, "I'm so grateful for the years I've had. I feel like I've lived a long life.' "
