Joseph Raymond Haegele, 43, served in the Gulf War
Joseph Raymond Haegele served with distinction during the Gulf War.
After the war the Covington native was known for the gentle way he helped refugees resettle.
"He was an administrator of a MASH unit that helped the families in Iraq, " said a sister, Beverly Drye of Highland Heights. "He was commended for his humanitarian efforts. He was a very sweet guy. He tried hard."
Mr. Haegele once hugged a young Gulf War refugee who was lost.
"Joe hugged the young boy, who thanked him and said he needed him, " said Ann Haegele of Covington, a sister-in-law. "Joe told the young boy in turn that he needed him, because he was away from his family back home."
Mr. Haegele, 43, of Covington, was found dead Friday at his home.
He was a captain and a MASH unit hospital administrator with the Kentucky National Guard, and an Army veteran of the Gulf War.
An autopsy has been performed, but an exact cause of death has not been determined, Mrs. Drye said. She said, however, that Mr. Haegele apparently died from natural causes, and that authorities don't suspect foul play.
Mr. Haegele was outgoing and was close to his siblings, said his sister-in-law.
"He was very intelligent and determined. He won a wrestling title for Holmes High School and had enough credits to graduate. But he stayed an extra year just to keep wrestling, " Mrs. Haegele said.
Besides his sister and sister-in-law, Mr. Haegele is also survived by his sons, Joseph H. Haegele and Aaron Haegele, both of Covington; a daughter, Amanda L. Haegele of Covington; brothers, Charlie Haegele of Cincinnati, Ebert Haegele of Covington, Ed Haegele of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Richard Haegele of Highland Heights; and sisters, Mary Lou Hinton of Covington, Kay Johnston of Cincinnati a nd Ruth Erdemir of Naperville, Ill., in addition to Ms. Drye.
