David Mattox Sr., car-repair shop owner, oversaw disaster services
When flood waters devastated Cynthiana in 1997, David Mattox Sr. was the cool headed leader who oversaw disaster and emergency services for the area. But, his role as director of the Cynthiana/Harrison County Disaster and Emergency Services was just one of many his family says he took on because he felt a responsibility to others.
"He just liked doing that kind of thing. He liked helping people, " said his son, David Mattox Jr.
David Mattox Sr., 69, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Hospice Care Center, Lexington.
Many knew Mr. Mattox through his 25 years as owner of Westside Shell and Auto Repair.
His son said Mr. Mattox operated a 24-hour towing service through the business, where people all over Harrison County got to know his dad's friendly, generous personality.
The elder Mattox also served people in crises through his former roles as Red Cross disaster chairman and president of the Kentucky State and Harrison County Radio Emergency Association Citizens Team Councils.
Before he took ownership of the Westside Shell, he had been a plant supervisor with Bluegrass Plant Foods for 20 years. He was a past president of the Harrison County Baseball League, a member of the Community Education Advisory Council and the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce, which awarded him its 1998 Citizen of the Year recognition.
Mr. Mattox's family said he was a deeply religious man who served as a former board member and lead usher with First Church of God, Cynthiana.
"I told him, the greatest thing he gave me really was that he raised me in a Christian home" his son said.
Mr. Mattox was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
