Karen Elizabeth Foltz, medical technician
Karen Elizabeth Foltz was first diagnosed with cancer in 1989. After treatment, she spent eight years in remission, but the cancer - non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - reappeared three years ago.
Weak from the disease and the chemotherapy treatments that she stopped a few weeks ago, Mrs. Foltz did one of the things she enjoyed best last Thursday: She attended her daughter's softball game and her son's baseball game.
"We thought we were going to have the whole summer, " said her husband, Gerard "Gary" Foltz.
Mrs. Foltz, 49, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at her home. She was a medical technician with Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs. She also was a member of the American Association of Clinical Pathologists.
When she was healthier, she volunteered with St. Joseph School's "Everybody Counts" program, where she talked to children about different disabilities.
Her family, especially her children - Sarah Foltz, 15, and Nicholas Foltz, 18 - were the most important part of her life, her husband said.
"She was an inspiration to everybody, " Mr. Foltz said. "She didn't hide her disease, but she handled it so well that people just admired her."
The Foltzes were to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this month. He'll remember her love for life the most.
"Everything she did, she put her all into it, " he said.
Besides her husband and children, her survivors include her mother, Margaret Kranz of Crestview Hills; and sisters, Kathy Reeves of Villa Hills and Carol Dorne of Union.
