Edith Brogan, backed political, civic causes
Ninety-three years ago when Edith G. Brogan was born, the world was a much more limiting place for women. But, Ms. Brogan, besides holding a full-time job, also was active in politics, and pushed for better opportunities for all women and better treatment of animals.
"She was very independent and very determined, " said her niece, Marilyn Brogan. "She stood up and fought for everything she believed in."
Ms. Brogan, of Covington, died Thursday at Florence Park Care Center.
She retired almost 30 years ago as a clerk with Albers Grocery Stores in Fort Thomas and Covington. She loved her work, but lived for her other activities and organizations, her family said.
Ms. Brogan was a past president of the Professional Women's and Business Club of Covington and the Kenton County Democratic Women's Club. She often told friends one of her most memorable moments was riding in a motorcade through Covington with John F. Kennedy during his 1960 campaign for president.
She also was tireless in her efforts with the League for Animal Welfare, administering funds from a trust established in Mary Laidley's will for neutering pets.
"She would just go nuts if people didn't have their animals spayed or neutered, " recalled Marilyn Brogan. "She managed Mary Laidley's trust until there were no more funds ..., then she spent some of her own money."
She was a past president of the Covington Art Club, Christopher Gist Historical Society and the Hibernians. She also was a member of the Rosie Reds and the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.
