Hazel Ruth Thomas Wilson, approached life with zest
Hazel Ruth Thomas Wilson's enthusiasm was infectious.
Whether it was playing the organ in church for 60 years or taking one of her trips abroad or across the country, she approached life with zest, said a granddaughter, Laurie Nienaber of Florence.
"She taught herself how to play the organ and continued playing until recently, " Mrs. Nienaber said.
"And she took me on a lot of trips with her. She went to Europe, Hawaii and Florida. She was very sweet. Everyone loved her."
Mrs. Wilson, 95, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was born and raised in Newport. Her family owned Wilson Furniture Co. in Bellevue - and later Newport - for 35 years before closing in 1972.
Mrs. Wilson was a former member of Salem United Methodist Church in Newport and Grace United Methodist Church in Bellevue.
She enjoyed staying active and being with her family and friends, her granddaughter said.
Mrs. Wilson wasn't outspoken, but possessed a strong will and wouldn't let anyone take advantage of her, Mrs. Nienaber said.
"We used to call her the "Queen Mom' because she kept her family together, " Mrs. Nienaber said.
Mrs. Wilson's husband, Raymond L. Wilson, preceded her in death.
Other survivors include a daughter, Shirley Torrey of Bellevue; a son, Raymond Wilson of Spring Hill, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Salvation Army Adult Day Care Center, W. 10th and Patterson, Newport, Ky. 41071.
Larry A. Barker, 66, of Covington, died at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was the retired owner of Larry's Transmission and a Marine Corps veteran. His wife, Arlene Barker, died in 1994.
Survivors include sons, Billy Barr and Larry Barr, both of Covington, Tony Barker of Elsmere and Sonny Thriskonis of Latonia; a daughter, Pamula Barker of Independence; brothers, Allen Barker of Erlanger, Mason Barker of Independence and Theodore Barker of Florida; sisters, Linda Pewett and Ann Sams, both of Florida; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate.
Karen R. Beiting, 36, of Alexandria, died at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Alexandria Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Bond, 89, of Owenton, died Wednesday at Owenton Manor. She was a postal worker and a member of First Baptist Church, Owenton. She was a secretary in the church children's department for 50 years. Her husband, Robert "Bird" Bond, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Bobby Johnson of Glasow; and stepmother, Virginia Johnson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 213 N. Main St., Owenton, Ky. 40359.
Suellen H. Browning, 64, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was an employee of Pendleton County Schools and Pendleton County Hospital, and was a member of Antioch Mills Christian Church, Berry.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Browning; sons, Walter A. Browning of Lancaster and Jeffrey Browning of Winchester; a daughter, Rebecca Ivey of Fairfield, Ohio; a brother, B. N. Wilson Jr. of Dry Ridge; sisters, Macella Kelly of Fort Thomas, Ruby Bentle, Wanda Harper, Bonnie Kavanaugh and Ardonna Brown, all of Falmouth; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Kenneth Lee Bryant, 72, of Southgate, died Tuesday at his home. He was an electrical inspector with Electrical Inspection Bureau Inc., a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Mount Carmel Methodist Church and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, June Bryant; stepdaughters, Cynthia Brown of Newport, Laura Link of Cold Spring and Kathy Lux of Louisville; daughters, Terry Bender of Milford, Ohio, and Lee Ann Kaelin of Batavia, Ohio; a son, Michael Bryant of Cincinnati; his mother, NathleeBryant of Lebanon, Ohio; a brother, Marvin Bryant of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister, Patty Richter of Chicago; and numerous grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Frances Cherrington, 83, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital Western Hills, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Hills Church of Christ, Cincinnati. Her husband, William Grant Cherrington II, died in 1961.
Survivors include a son, William Grant Cherrington III of Cincinnati; a daughter, Rebecca Jean Ballard of Kingsport, Tenn.; a brother, Swilferd Lemons of Cincinnati; sisters, Edith Sandlin, Bette Anderson and Nancye Strasser, all of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to charity of the donor's choice.

Dorothy M. Mains, 74, of Florence, died at 4:44 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was owner of Jess and Dot's Carryout, Covington. Her husband, Jesse Mains, died in 1990. Sons, Joseph Webster and Randell Webster, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Gail Henson and Audrey Wagoner, both of Covington, Pearl Kennedy of Florence and Dorothy Widener of Owenton; a brother, Earl Banfield of Latonia; sisters, Betty Stickrod of Newport, Joyce Skeens of Cincinnati and Helen Bryant of Covington; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Ida Nunnelley, 77, of Williamstown, died Thursday at Grant Manor Health CAre Center, Williamstown.

Nettie L. Dunn Richey, 79, of Jacksonville, Fla., died Saturday at her home. She was a former employee of the Georgetown, Ohio, Shoe Factory and RCA in Norwood, Ohio.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Richey; a stepdaughter, Patricia Richey of Independence; and sisters, Ida Sunn of Mount Orab, Ohio, and Nancy Keiffer of Jacksonville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Thompson-Stevens Funeral Home, Mount Orab. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Orab Cemetery.
Robert L. Schwartz, 72, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a dispatcher with Ace Doran Trucking Co. and a member of St. Paul Church in Florence and the Good Guys Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Schwartz; a son, Bob Schwartz of Falmouth; daughters, Brenda Schwartz of Florence, Kathy Schwartz of Burlington and Lisa Hartig of Melbourne; brothers, James Schwartz of Phoenix, Howard Schwartz of San Diego and Carl Schwartz of Villa Hills; sisters, Mary Ann Pryatel of Russell, Ohio, Rose Rolfsen of Baton Rouge, La., Sadie Schwartz of St. Joseph, Mich., and Mary Schwartz of Independence; and four grandchildren.

Lorraine A. Siekman, 87, of Madison, Tenn., formerly of Florence, died at 5:20 a.m. Monday at Imperial Nursing Home, Madison. She was a homemaker and a member of Bullitsville Christian Church in Burlington, Hebron Homemakers and Petersburg PTA. Her husband, Irwin Lloyd Siekman, died in 1989. A son, Jeffery Siekman, died in 2000. A daughter, Donna Horn, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Emily D. Morris of Nashville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Terry Wayne Stickels Sr., 53, of Union, died Tuesday at his home. He was a manager of the Walgreen Drug Store, Erlanger, and a member of Faith Christian Center, Park Hills.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Stickels; a son, Terry Wayne Stickels Jr. of Florence; a daughter, Stephanie Lynn White of Fort Mitchell; his father, Ray Samuel Stickels Sr. of Florence; brothers, Ray Samuel Stickels Jr. of Hamilton, Ohio, and Creston Wade Stickels Sr. of Union; and two grandchildren.

Fern A. Taylor, 76, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Elsmere Baptist Church, Daughters of America and Women's Auxiliary of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer A. Taylor; and a brother, Edward Overpeck of Corbett, Ore.

Alfred Trosper, 80, of Williamstown, died at 1:26 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired lead delivery driver with Grant County Board of Education, a coal miner and a member of Willow Grove Baptist Church, Harlan County. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Edith Young Trosper, died in 1992. A son, Charles Trosper, died in 1969.
Survivors include daughters, Angela Strong and Jean Williams, both of Williamstown, and Susan Jones of Corinth; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
