Arthur Mergenthal, principal
Whether it was playing professional football, fighting off muggers, or leading a local elementary school, Arthur Mergenthal owed much of his success in life to the fact that he was one tough guy.
"One of the more recent stories happened along Riviera Drive about 10 years ago, " said Gil Lynn, former Dayton mayor and friend. "He was on his bicycle and two guys jumped him. He threw them both in the creek."
Mr. Mergenthal was about 70 at the time.

It was the same attitude that allowed him to develop into one of the area's best football players and go on to play guard for the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams.
"His brother, Bob, was one of the original Bengals and then Art played for Bellevue (High School), and then Tennessee and Alabama, and then, Notre Dame, " said Lynn. "He moved around and got scholarships. He was one incredible football player."
