Glenn C. Steffen, butcher and World War II veteran
Glenn C. Steffen liked to keep his hands busy.
Whether he was working in his chosen profession of butcher or helping a neighbor or friend tinker with a car, Mr. Steffen's hands seemed always to be working on something, said his son, David Steffen of Union.
Ironically, Mr. Steffen received a Purple Heart after he was shot in the hand while serving with the Army in Italy during World War II, his son said.
"He was wounded and took some shrapnel in the neck and took a bullet to the hand, " David Steffen said. "It didn't take away any of his abilities, though."
Mr. Steffen, 76, of Florence, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center.
After the war, Mr. Steffen returned to Northern Kentucky and became a second-generation butcher, learning the trade from his father.
Mr. Steffen retired from Runtz Packing Co. in Cincinnati in 1985 after 40 years as a butcher at three slaughterhouses, his son said. Mr. Steffen's father schooled him at his first job at Rice Packing in Cincinnati.
After his retirement, Mr. Steffen enjoyed tinkering with automobiles and walking at Crestview Hills Mall, his son said.
"He loved to work on other people's cars, but when his Parkinson's disease set in, he couldn't handle tools anymore, " David Steffen said.
