Donald Brandt, restored classic cars
Donald Franklin Brandt, a retired electrician who restored classic autos and renovated homes, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was 65.
Mr. Brandt and his wife, Charlotte Due Brandt, lived in Edgewood. He had been working on a new house in North Carolina when he became ill and was diagnosed with cancer more than a year ago.
"My father was very talented, very strong-willed and very independent, " said his daughter, Marion Carol Bertke of Florence.
"He was always doing something and he was not afraid to try anything."
Mr. Brandt had been an industrial electrician for 25 years with Signode Corp. in Kenton County.
In his free time, he always had a project. He did woodworking and built cabinets and book shelves in his home and in the homes of friends.
In the 1980s he started restoring classic automobiles. He loved to play golf and do outdoor work.
As a young man he had apprenticed as an electrician with the Southern Railroad in Salisbury, N.C., where his father worked as an engineer.
Mr. Brandt developed a lifelong passion for the railroad and collected memorabilia, including the name plate from his father's engine.
He also studied the history of World War II, spending hours discussing the battles with friends.
He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Lakeside Park and Masonic Lodge No. 109, Covington.
"The greatest gift he ever gave me was this last year together, " said his daughter. "He and I talked about everything.
"He told me over and over, 'Don't take any day for granted.' So many people think family will always be there. He told me 'Don't waste your time not being with your family.' "
Besides his wife and daughter, survivors include a son, Michael K. Brandt of New York, N.Y.; another daughter, Catheycq Doncq Terrigno of Bridgeton, N.J.; mother, Helen T. Brandt of Spencer, N.C.; brothers, Charles F. Brandt of Mason, Ohio, and Thomas E. Brandt of Spencer, N.C.; sisters, Elizabeth Earnhardt of Raleigh, N.C., and Faye L. Jacobs of Charlotte, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at noon MondayA9 at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Lakeside Park. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. Monday until the time of services at the church.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Patricia Lee Collins, 64, of Cincinnati, died Thursday at her home.
She was a waitress at White Castle. Her husband, Daniel P. Collins Sr., died in 1996.
Survivors include her son, Daniel P. Collins Jr. of Corinth; daughters, Deborah Collins Duane and Linda Collins Kuhl, both of Cincinnati; a sister, Lorraine Francisco; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Gump-Holt Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.

Herman H. Kaiser, 92, of Covington, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was a retired freight handler for L&N; Railroad and a member of the Transportation Communication International Union. A son, Mark Edward Kaiser, died in 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Rose Reed Kaiser of Covington; sons, David Lee Kaiser of Florence and Paul Douglas Kaiser of Park Hills; a daughter, Esther Mae Miles of Newport; sisters, Caroline M. Nicholson of Lakeside Park and Alma Uebel of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Emmet Orne LaPorte, 78, of Highland Heights, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a retired mechanic for various service stations in Covington. His wife, Betty Lou Hammond, died in 1979.
Survivors include his son, David LaPorte of Covington; daughters, Sandy Miller of Jeffersonville, Ind., Debbie Lewis of Carrollton and Mary Lou Guinn, Peggy Suttle and Margaret Phelps, all of Covington; a brother, Orley LaPorte of Gilman, Ill.; sisters, Dolores Whitman and Harla Timms, both of Midlothian, Ill., and LaVerne Bothe, Arley Thomazek, Gertrude Schubert and Ione Cooper, all of Inverness, Fla.; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Nina Louise Siler, 69, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
John Joseph Tuemler, 81, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was a retired electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 212, Cincinnati, and a former member of the Holy Name Society at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Brennan Tuemler; sons, John Joseph Tuemler Jr. of Edgewood, David Tuemler of Bradenton, Fla., Harry Tuemler of Ludlow, Thomas Tuemler of Burlington, Anthony Tuemler of Covington and James Tuemler of Erlanger; daughters, Jane Trenkamp of Fort Wright, Ruth Anne Neubacher and Esther Dirheimer, both of Edgewood, Terri Krefting of Crestview Hills and Mary Elizabeth Blevins of Burlington; a sister, Bettie Moser of Crestview Hills; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Cora Elizabeth Turner, 78, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
She was an assembler for Bendix Corp. and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Her husband, Beuford C. Turner, died in 1998. A brother, Ernst Bishop, died in 1930.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Faul of Independence; brothers, Chester Bishop of Cincinnati and Stanley Bishop of Falmouth; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery.
Oda Belle Woods, 78, of Maysville, died at 11 a.m. Friday at Augusta Health Care Center.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton Keville Woods of Maysville; sons, Raymond Woods of Augusta and Harvey Ghrem Woods and Billy Dean Woods, both of Florida; daughters, Brenda Woods Miller of Dayton, and Martha Lou Woods Adams and Tammy Woods, both of Maysville; a brother, Harvey Planck of Flemingsburg; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
