'Tater' Gallenstein, owned Washington bar
Nobody knows how Walter Gallenstein got his nickname, but just about everybody ar ound Washington, Ky., knew "Tater" and the town gathering spot that bears his name.
For 40 years, Walter "Tater" Gallenstein has packed them into "Tater's" bar, even though he has long since passed his bar towel to his son.
"It's really called 'Gallenstein's Place, ' but everybody calls it 'Tater's.' A nd we just call it 'The Place, "' said Mr. Gallenstein's daughter, Madge Butcher of Washington. "He retired in '92, but he just quit cooking for us last year. He loved people and ... he was well-loved around here."
Mr. Gallenstein, 81, died Saturday at his home in Washington.
He was also a tobacco and cattle farmer, spending many years farming all day and then working his bar and restaurant on Old Main Street in Washington at night.
Ms. Butcher said her father not only enjoyed being with people, but also cooking for them.
"He loved to cook his country ham for his country ham sandwiches, " she said. "And he would fry turtle ... just like you would chicken. Our house was right next door (to Gallenstein's Place) and our house was always open. As kids, we always had people here."
Mr. Gallenstein was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, who served in the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He saw action in both the North African and European theaters.
He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Maysville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Rose "Pug" Gallenstein.
Survivors also include a son, Walter David Gallenstein; sisters, Margaret Smith of Boca Raton, Fla., and Virginia Kleekamp of Cincinnati; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Brell & Son Funeral Home, 620 E. Second St., Maysville. The praying of the rosary follows at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Church in Maysville. Burial is in St. Patrick cemetery in Maysville.

Samuel H. Ballard Jr., 50, of Maysville, died at 8:06 p.m. Friday at his home.
He was a maintenance worker with January & Wood Co., Maysville.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Ballard; sons, Samuel Herbert Ballard III and Jessie Ballard, both of Maysville; a daughter, Lee Ann Duncan of Augusta; brothers, Billy Ballard and Jimmy Ballard; sisters, Leona Ballard and Susie Ballard, both of Cincinnati, and Waylon Duncan of Arkansas; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 6 tonight. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery.
James Blanton, 70, of Williamstown, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
James Carr, 65, of Bellevue, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a plant manager with Handschy Printing Co. and a former funeral director with Dobbling Funeral Homes.
Survivors include a brother, Richard Carr of Cold Spring.

Edwin E. Chinn, 77, of Germantown, died Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Germantown Christian Church. His wife, Ida Berry Hinson Chinn, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Allen Chinn of Brooksville; a daughter, Deeann Ruppert of Cynthiana; a sister, Edythe Chinn Jordan of Dayton, Ohio; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

Eleanor Cooney, 81, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Jeff Doyle, 90, of Butler, died Friday at his home.
He was a retired employee of American Laundry and a member of Butler Baptist Church. His wives, Opel Hellard Doyle and Mary Helen Doyle, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Harold Doyle and Donnie Doyle, both of Butler, and Rick Doyle of Berry; daughters, Christine James, Donna Moreland, Carol Hurst and Shirley Bass, all of Butler, and Wanda Vater of Alexandria; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Ellen Flynn Fannin, 74, of Brooksville, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
She was a cafeteria worker and a member of Powersville Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Vernell Fannin; a son, Danny R. Fannin of Lebanon Junction; a brother, William Elmo Flynn of Elsmere; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Carol Sue Hughes, 52, of Covington, died at 12:40 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Edward Hughes; a daughter, Tina Fitzgearld of Oklahoma City; sisters, Patricia Hetman of Moores Hill, Ind., and Gail Stacy of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Richard A. Kremer, 58, of Verona, died Thursday in Petersburg.
He was a self-employed truck driver with Prodigal Trucking Co., a founder of Teen Residents Experience Christ, and a member of Louisville Emmaus, Northern Kentucky Emmaus and Residents Encounter Christ. He also was a Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Jessica Oliver and Jennifer Edmonds, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Pattaye Achterberg of El Cajon, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Lucille Ashby Long, 92, of Carrollton, died Friday at Green Valley Health Care Center in Carrollton.
She was a member of Carrollton United Methodist Church and Carroll County Democrat Women's Club. Her husband, Frank Long, died in 1986. A daughter, Norma McAllister, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Billy Long of Carrollton; a daughter, Alice Burke of Frankfort; sisters, Ann B. Wiley of Greensburg, Ind., and Bess Lawrence of Carrollton; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Bessie Mardis, 92, of Fort Thomas, died at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Mardis, died in 1974.
Survivors include son, John Mardis of Independence and Jerry Mardis of Ryland Heights; a daughter, Margaret Lindsey of Tampa, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Howard Philpot, 76, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Independence, a retired employee of Cincinnati Gas & Electric and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, David Howard Philpot of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Shawn Philpot of Erlanger; daughters, Judy Philpot of Walton, Jane Dolch of Dry Ridge, Bettie Ashton of Berry and Lois McCubbin of Independence; a stepdaughter, Linda Goodman of Granite City, Ill.; a sister, Carolyn Grubbs of Cynthiana; brothers, Warren Philpot of Berry, James Philpot and John Philpot, both of Cynthiana; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was a retired employee of the Ford Motor Co.

She was a retired teacher and a member of Erlanger United Methodist Church and Fayette County Retired Teachers Association.
