Frederick Oney, bank president and school board chairman
Frederick Benton Oney knew education's value extended beyond its usefulness in earning a living. And he worked hard to convince those around him of the same, in his roles as a Carrollton banker and school leader.
"He was very proud of kids who stayed in school and graduated and went on to some sort of education afterward, " said Mr. Oney's daughter, Suzanne Lakamp of her father's efforts as chairman of the Carroll County Board of Education.
"That was something he worked very hard to see that the school system brought that forth."
Frederick Benton Oney, 83, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at his home.
He retired as president of First National Bank of Carrollton in 1983, a position he had held since 1960.
Mr. Oney continued to serve as chairman of the bank's board of directors until 1997. At the time of his death, he was serving as director emeritus of the bank.
Outside of his profession, he committed many hours to the Carroll County Board of Education. Mr. Oney served as a member and chairman of the body in the 1960s. He worked to convince Carroll County youth, particularly those from farm families, that tobacco might bring them money, but only education would enrich their lives.
"It was easy for them to turn their attention to the profits of tobacco, and leave school at 16 and go to farm with their families, " said Ms. Lakamp. "But my father grew up in eastern Kentucky ... and he saw how many had money from coal mining and no education. That was very enlightening to him."
Mr. Oney was also past president of the Kentucky Bankers Association. He was a long-time member of United Methodist Church of Carrollton choir, and an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
A son, Frederick B. Oney Jr., preceded him in death.

Tom Everman, father, foster parent, deacon
Wherever Tom Everman was, there was sure to be a group of children.
Mr. Everman, a deacon at Hickory Baptist Church in Independence, loved kids. He taught them in Sunday school, coached them in softball and directed a church basketball league. He opened his home to kids whenever he could.
It even led to his decision not to be a teacher.
"He loved kids until the day he died, " said his wife, Ina Vahlsing Everman, a teacher.
"He had such a talent with kids that, as a teacher, I envied. I said to him at one point, 'Why don't you go back to school and become a teacher'? He said, 'No, because then they'd have to call me Mr. Everman. This way, I'm Tom.' "
Mr. Everman, 59, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington after an extended illness. He suffered from diabetes and had taken especially hard the death of his sister, Dorothy Hacker, three weeks ago.
Mr. Everman was a prefabricator with R. A. Jones Co., a youth mentor at his church and loved gardening.
Together, the Evermans ended up raising more than a few children. They opened their house to foster children and other children who needed a loving home or an understanding friend. It was a habit that started early in the couple's life - after returning home from their honeymoon on a Friday 32 years ago, they had an entire ball team over for dinner on Saturday.
Later, their sons and daughter's friends filled the Everman home, along with seven foster children and others that came and went as the couple worked with Kentucky Baptist Childcare.
When grandchildren came, Mr. Everman couldn't have been happier. He made a point to buy each their own little red wagon.
On Tuesday, with Mr. Everman in the hospital, his daughter gave birth to the Evermans' third grandchild, a little girl.
