Sister Pauline Rice, teacher for 41 years
Filled with a great joy for life, Sister Pauline Rice knew how to use laughter to help others through difficult times.
"There was always laughter wherever Sister Pauline was, " said Sister Xavier Anneken, who entered St. Walburg Monastery when Sister Pauline did.
"Her joy in life always showed itself in her humor and her thoughtfulness to others."
Sister Pauline, formerly Sister Damien, 76, died Tuesday at her residence at St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills.
"Sister Pauline was a mentor and friend to many lay staff at the monastery and Villa Madonna Academy, " said Sister Margaret Mary Gough.
"She was especially beloved by her nieces and nephews of two generations. She could strike a spark in young people to develop their skills and use their gifts and talents."
A native of Covington, Sister Pauline was one of nine children. She entered St. Walburg Monastery in 1946 and made a profession of final vows in 1951.
Early in her religious life she received the name, Sister Damien, but returned to her baptismal name when given the option.
She started teaching at St. Therese School in Southgate in September 1948.
That was the first of what would become 41 years devoted to Catholic education, serving as a teacher or principal at St. John's Orphanage; St. James School in Brooksville; St. Henry School, Erlanger; Sts. Peter & Paul School, Danville; Mother of Good Counsel, Hazard; Holy Cross, Latonia; St. Pius X, Edgewood; St. Joseph, Crescent Springs; and Villa Madonna Academy. She also worked as assistant to the registrar at Thomas More College for five years and as a teacher in the Education Department of Edgecliff College.
Sister Pauline maintained her optimism even after being diagnosed with cancer in November 1999. Her attitude set an example for those who knew her.
"Sister Pauline was given the gift of a good sense of humor, " said Sister Justina Franxman. "She kept it and shared it to the very end. Through the years I thanked her for lightening many difficult days during my first year as a beginning teacher."
Sister Pauline was a skilled craftsman, knowledgeable in painting, varnishing and other techniques necessary for the restoration of old furniture.
