Lawanda Sue Raines, missing for many years
After 12 years of uncertainty, the family of Lawanda Sue Raines will mark her death and celebrate her life with a memorial service in Owenton on Saturday.
A funeral will be held in Ohio at a later date.
Ms. Raines was 33 when she died on May 20, 1989. A former boyfriend has been charged with killing her, and he led police last month to her body.
At the time of her death, Ms. Raines, of Owenton, was a nursing student at Kentucky State University and was turning her life around after a troubled youth that included drugs and alcohol and involvement with a motorcycle gang.
That was the past, said her sister-in-law, Mary Susan Tomlin. Ms. Rains had been building a very different future in the last three years of her life. She passed her high school equivalency exam and was in her second year of nursing school, making good grades and planning a career as a nurse.
She was living in an apartment with her 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Summer, and was a loving, joyful mother, Mrs. Tomlin said. She had been divorced, and three older children were living with their father.
"She had come to the realization that she wanted to make a better life for her and her little girl, " Mrs. Tomlin said.
Ms. Raines also had hoped to establish closer ties with her older children, Mrs. Tomlin said.
"Her spirit was always positive, " Mrs. Tomlin said. "She was full of life, and she knew she would make it."
Mrs. Tomlin recalled a weekend when she watched Summer as Ms. Raines studied for her exams.
"She left me detailed instructions about everything Summer needed, what she liked to do. She titled it 'Life with Summer, ' " Mrs. Tomlin said.
Just before Ms. Raines disappeared, she had gone to a friend's birthday party. She had just passed her exams and was celebrating.
