'Bitsy' Stapleton brought students a hug every day
Sheila "Bitsy" Stapleton Feldman became a teacher for all of the right reasons. She taught in the Newport School District for 19 years, helping fourth-grade students learn about life as well as books.
Mrs. Feldman, 57, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday at her home.
She was known to hug her students at the end of the day. Every year, she bought them sweatshirts that said they were awesome. She sent letters home with children detailing their accomplishments.
And, if the parents didn't respond, she'd call them at home, said her husband of nearly 3 4 years, William A. Feldman of Fort Thomas. "She was just a genuine person.
"I've never seen a person who had so many best friends. She just had the knack of inspiring people, " he said.
Mrs. Feldman was a retired teacher for A.D. Owens Elementary, Newport, a member of the Thomas More Alumni Association, Northern Kentucky University Alumni Association, A.D. Owens Elementary School PTA, Kentucky Education Association, National Education Association, Campbell County Democratic Women's Club and St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas.
Mrs. Feldman's father was the late Paul Stapleton, who served for many years as a circuit judge in Northern Kentucky.
Mrs. Feldman was a native of Fort Thomas who enjoyed being with her family and friends, her husband said.
And she always thought of her students as an extension of her family, her husband said.
"She spent many nights writting letters, " Mr. Feldman said.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Feldman is also survived by her sons, William Feldman of Newport, Brian Feldman of Mason, Ohio, and Robert Feldman of Midway; sister, Sue Kuhnell of Burlington; and a grandson.
