Bob Marsh, 78, a life interwoven with baseball
Bob Marsh's name is synonymous with baseball in Northern Kentucky.
He was supervisor of District No. 28 of Kenton County Knothole Baseball for 12 years; he ran softball leagues at the Covington ball park before Interstate 75 came through, and his son, Randy, is a veteran major league umpire.
Robert R. Marsh, 78, of Edgewood, died at 7:55 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired owner of the former Bob Marsh's Modern Market, Covington, a former certified dental technician and a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
"He was very close to his family, . . . and he loved baseball, " said Randy Marsh. "He loved going to games when I was umpiring."
The younger Mr. Marsh said his parents went to baseball games together and got to know Reds broadcasters Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall.
"We would see him frequently when Randy was working, " Mr. Brennaman said. "He was a huge baseball fan, and a big Randy fan. He was very proud of what Randy had accomplished."
Mr. Marsh said it wasn't unusual for his parents to have dinner at their home with umpires Augie Donatelli, John McSherry, Harry Wendelstadt and Al Barlick.
Mr. Marsh was an Army veteran of World War II and learned dental technician skills in the Army. When he returned from the Army, he had a dental laboratory for a time, then worked for an oral surgeon office in Cincinnati.
He ran his market for about 15 years, wearing the ball caps of Reds' opponents each day the Reds played. Umpires often stopped at the store at 15th and Greenup.
He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park and Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 345 F&AM, and a former member of the Covington Elks.
His wife, Blanche L. "Dood" Marsh, died in 2000.
In addition to his son, of Edgewood, survivors include daughters, Candice Dee Bruns of Greenwood, Ind., and Kimberley S. Johnson of Odessa, Fla.; a brother, James Miller of Rochester, Mich.; and four granddaughters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be at 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by Masonic services. A reception will follow services Wednesday at Devou Park Memorial Building, Covington.
Entombment will be in Mother of God Mausoleum, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Senior Services of Northern Kentucky, 1032 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.
Betty B. Alexander, 83, of Melbourne, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired housekeepper for Northern Kentucky University. Her husband, George R. Alexander, died in 1985.
Survivors include her sons, George William Alexander of Newport and John R. Alexander of Newport; daughter, Barbara Milius of Alexandria; sister, Macie Potter of Jenkins; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
James Earl Billings, 54, of Newport, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East.
He was a self-employed mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Billings; a daughter, Angela Billings Compton of Newport; sons, Stephen Billings of Newport and Tony Billings of Dayton; brothers, Tom Billings of Bracken County, Albert Billings of Pendleton County, Alvin Billings of Crescent Springs, Dan Billings of Bellevue and Richard Billings of Grant County; sisters, Ruth Barrett of Alexandria and Denise Coldiron of New Richmond, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Frank M. Canfield, 81, of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired truck mechanic with Kroger Co., Cincinnati, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Doerning Canfield; sons, Victor Canfield of Covington and Kevin Canfield of Middletown, Ohio; daughters, Mary Ann Toth of Plymouth, Mich., and Camille Howard of Bedford; a sister, Helen Canfield of Covington; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Diocesan Catholic Children's Home, 75 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
Cecil Ray Evans, 78, of Florence, died at 11:50 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired driver with General Motors Corp., Norwood, Ohio, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Dirkes Evans; and a sister, Margaret Franxman of Florence.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Highland Pet Cemetery, 2167 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
Virginia "Ginger" Franzen, 44, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at her home. She was a customer representative with the Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Franzen; a daughter, Rachel Franzen of Florence; a son, Richard Franzen of Fort Thomas; brothers, Leroy Kendrick of Fort Thomas and Theodore Kendrick of Southgate; and a sister, Beatrice Sapp of Sardinia, Ohio.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.
Betty Jane Grimes, 76, of Dayton, died at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired employee of the U.S. Playing Card Co. and a member of Dayton Eagles.
Survivors include brothers, Roy Grimes of Burlington and Jim Grimes of Indiana; and sisters, Louise Henthorn of Cincinnati and Marie Morency of Loveland, Ohio.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton, is handling arrangements.
John L. Hafer, 67, of California, was shot and killed Saturday at Sandtrap Bar in Alexandria.
He was a retired truck driver with Castellini Co., Wilder, and a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 in Alexandria and Grants Lick Baptist Church. He was a Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Hafer of Elsmere and Charlene Craig of Cincinnati; a brother, Terry Hafer of Grants Lick; sisters, Betty Morgan, Josephine Cook and Pauline Lemenkuhler, all of Cincinnati, Sally Friedley and Mae Hafer, both of Grants Lick, Thelma Gibson of Corbin and Martha Lyons of Florence; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grants Lick Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials are suggested to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Ethridge F. Haynes, 92, of Maysville, died Saturday in West Union, Ohio. She was a supervisor with Carnation Milk Co., Maysville. Her husband, Eugene Haynes, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a sister, Ida Hudgins of Maysville; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were this morning at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville.
Jackie T. Laytart, 58, of Berry, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

Daryl L. Ramsey Lewis, 47, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired security guard with Bigg's Eastgate Supermarket, Cincinnati, and a member of Our Saviour Church, Covington.
Survivors include a sister, Tina Marie Lewis of Florence; and a niece.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Romaine Alma Rawe, 77, of Alexandria, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired supervisor with Disabled American Veterans. Her husband, Vincent Joseph Rawe Sr., died in 1994.
Survivors include sons, Vince Rawe and Greg Rawe, both of California, Bob Rawe of Fairfield, Ohio, Dave Rawe of Grantsville, Md., Tom Rawe, Bernie Rawe and Mike Rawe, all of Alexandria; a daughter, Patricia Schneider of Highland Heights; sisters, Dorothy Koher of Erlanger, Mary Schmits of Bellevue, LaVerne Simon of Englewood, Ohio and Mildred Schiesler of Fort Thomas; brothers, Roman Grothaus of Modesto, Calif., Don Grothaus and Len Grothaus, both of Cold Spring, Vernon Grothaus of Fort Thomas and Norb Grothaus of Milford, Ohio; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert E. Ryan Sr., 96, of Covington, died at 7:25 p.m. Friday at Crest Manor Nursing Home, Erlanger. He was a retired stationary engineer with the Covington Waterworks and a member of St. Ann Church in Covington and the Eeenie Social Club.
He was a former minor league baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, a semi-professional ball player and a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. His wife, Katherine Gillen Ryan, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Wagner of Erlanger; a son, Robert E. Ryan Jr. of Independence; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Shirley Mae Scott, 74, of Covington, died Dec. 5 at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her caretak er, Elmira Scott of Villa Hills.

Juanita Slay, 58, of Newport, died Saturday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Newport Free Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Slay; sons, Doug Dozier Slay of Covington and Joey Eggle ston Slay of Crescent Springs; sisters, Dot Ackman of Ludlow, Jenny Perry of Somerset, Anna Hobbs of Beattyville and Laura Cox of Eastview; brothers, Arch Long of Ludlow and Wilburn Long of Har lan.

Velma Marie Whittaker Spaulding, 83, of Butler, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a home maker.
Her husband, Claude Spauld ing, died in 1994. A son, Eugene Spaulding, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Marie Prim and Charlotte Kramer, both of Alexandria, and Stella Loretta Caldwell of Butler; sisters, Jo hanna Grogan of Butler and Claire Siry of Alexandria; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Carl Anthony Wenderoth, 87, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Coving ton.
He was a meat cutter with Kroger Co., and owned his own food market in Dayton for 50 years. He served as mayor of Dayton from 1948-52, was a former Dayton city councilman, and was a member of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a member of the Camp bell County Republican Party Committee, was a public address announcer for the Dayton High School football teams and was a sponsor of several Knothole baseball, softball and bowling teams.
His wife, Anne Nicholson Wenderoth, died in 1990. A daughter, Diane Mae Wenderoth, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, C. R. "Bud" Wenderoth of Dry Ridge; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
No services are planned. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
