Hilda Heck, helped both heart patients, students
Hilda Neltner Heck wasn't one to be idle in life.
In fact, after recovering from coronary bypass surgery, Mrs. Heck became a member of the Mended Hearts Club, an organization that encourages heart patients to overcome their difficulties.
Mrs. Heck, who grew up on a family farm in Campbell County, was also heavily involved in the Parent-Teacher Associations at Covington Latin, Notre Dame Academy and Bishop Brossart High School.
A son, Dr. Stan Heck of Wyoming, Ohio, said his mother was very compassionate.
"She was a strong, giving woman, " Dr. Heck said. "She was full of energy and couldn't do enough to help other people."
Mrs. Heck, 80, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, where she was active in the St. Mary's Ladies Society, the Mother's Club, Senior Citizens Club, and Mariner's C lub. She was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and served as an eucharistic minister at Lakeside Care Center in Highland Heights.
Other survivors include her husband of 55 years, George P. Heck Sr.; daughters, Margie Myers of Naperville, Ill., and Rosemarie Holthaus of Red Cloud, Neb.; another son, George P. Heck Jr. of Prague, Czech Republic; a sister, Edna Mae Geiman of Highland Heights; brothers, Howard Neltner and Peter Neltner, both of Alexandria, and Leroy Neltner of Cold Spring; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Paul J. Abshire, 63, of Houston, died at 7:33 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Abshire of Houston; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Rose McNeal Ball, 84, of Worthville, died Wednesday at Owen County Hospital, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Dallasburg Baptist Church. A son, Paul Wayne Ball, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, John G. Ball Jr.; daughters, Janet F. Monroe and Mary Rose King, both of Louisville; a brother, Henry G. Reed of Louisville; sisters, Olivia Ball of Wheatley and Betty F. Lusby of Louisville; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wheatley Cemetery. Larry Nelson Barnes, 57, of Carrollton, died Sunday at his home. He was a former dispatcher with the Carrollton Police Department.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Bingham Barnes; daughters, Patricia Johnson of Carrollton and April Roberts of Pleasureville; a son, Shanon Barnes of Carrollton; a stepdaughter, Angela Barnes of Carrollton; a brother, Eugene Barnes of North Vernon, Ind.; a half-brother, Ricky Barnes of Louisville; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Carrollton. Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.
Edward Biddle, 83, of Verona, died at 1:33 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Russell Bowling, 82, of Southgate, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired foreman with NatMar Corp., Cincinnati, and an inventor. Mr. Bowling held the patent for the holder for cemetery wreaths for monuments. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Congregation Worldwide Church of God in Park Hills, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Ruth Bowling, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Wermeling of Covington and Mavis Bechtle of Fort Thomas; and one grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate.
Robert L. Butler, 60, of Alexandria, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired warehouse supervisor with Leuger's Furniture Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Unity Baptist Church in Demossville and Honeybee Beagle Hunting Club in Crittenden.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Butler; sons, Robert Butler of Silver Grove and Jeff Butler of Independence; sisters, Geraldine Collins of Covington and Barbara Stayton of Ludlow; a brother, Ronald Butler of Ludlow; and six grandchildren.

Delsie M. Preston Craig, 85, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at Villa Springs, Erlanger.

Mary Frances Dawes, 64, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Orville Dawes, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, William Egan of Bellevue; daughters, Kelly Church of Newport, Sharon Hornback of Dry Ridge and Angela Haynes of Bellevue; a brother, James Bowen of Georgia; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clarabelle M. Fletcher, 84, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a manager of the cafeteria at Conner Senior High School, and a deacon emeritus and choir member at Florence Christian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Kentucky State PTA. Her husband, Frank Fletcher, died in 1970.
Survivors include daughters, Lynn Fewell and Joan Roberts, both of Suwannee, Ga.; sons, Frank Fletcher of Paducah and Roger Fletcher of Florence; sisters, Violet Prinz of Covington and Lorna Wilde of Independence; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary E. Floyd, 91, of Warsaw, died Tuesday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker and a member of Whiteoak Baptist Church, London. Her husband, Luther Floyd, a daughter, Helen Schirmer, and a son, Huey Floyd, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Wanda Kelley of Willisburg and Sandy Wheeler of Sparta; sons, James H. Floyd of Phillpott, Michael Floyd of Verona, Donald Floyd of Glencoe and Gerald Floyd of California; 34 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

Harry Eugene Harney, 67, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at his home. He was a U.S. Justice Department employee, a plumber and an electrician. He was a member and a deacon of Cynthiana Christian Church and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Parker Harney; a son, Timothy Eugene Harney of Harrison County; daughters, Sandra Jean Frederick of Harrison County and Beverly Ann Rice of Lexington; a sister, Linda Corman of Nicholasville; and four grandchildren.

Louise Arnzen McMahon, 91, of Newport, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Ladies Auxiliary Knights of St. John. Her husband, William C. McMahon, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, William J. McMahon of Melbourne; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Cary J. Meese, 52, of Walton, died at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a self-employed truck driver.

Gene Robinson, 88, of Florence, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. He was a furrier with H&S; Pogue Co. and a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church. His wife, Emma Grace Robinson, died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Robert Gene Robinson of Englewood, Ohio; a half-sister, Mary Alice Krolage of Latonia; and three grandchildren.

Dr. Ralph Sinning, 80, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a chiropractor and a member of Fort Thomas Masonic Lodge. He was a past president and state treasurer of the Chiropractic Association of Kentucky, a past president of the Northern Kentucky Chiropractic Association and a member of Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club and the American Legion. He was a past treasurer of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas, and an Army veteran.

Lloyd C. Smith, 85, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired General Motors employee, a deacon with Augusta Christian Church and a member of Augusta VFW Post No. 9535 and United Auto Workers Union Local No. 674. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Christina Teegarden Smith, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Sharon Lucas, Karen Woodruff and Peggy Kelsch, all of Augusta; a sister, Ruby Dean of Augusta; a brother, Estil Ray Smith of Augusta; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Duvall Tipton, 70, of Walton, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday in Crittenden of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
She was a self-employed caterer and wedding cake maker, and a former member of Northern Kentucky Technical School, Kenton County.
