James Samuel Rainey, long-time farmer
James Samuel Rainey was a successful Harrison County farmer who never lost sight of the true foundation of every farmer's productivity - the soil.
Throughout his life, his family says he remained committed to preserving the quality of the land he grew up on.
"He was a beef cattle and tobacco farmer, and he was (awarded) Master Conservationist by the conservation district in the early '90s, " said his son and farming partner, James Darryl Rainey.
"He was always involved in good farming practices."
James Samuel "Sam" Rainey, 82, of Harrison County, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
Mr. Rainey worked the 320-acre farm he grew up on off Pughs Ferry Road. He was active in numerous agricultural organizations including the American Polled Hereford Association and the Harrison County Soil Conservation District.
He was a Farm Services Association Community Committeeman and a member of the Kentucky Farm Bureau.
Mr. Rainey was equally committed to his faith. As a member of the Richland Baptist Church, he conducted business meeting for many years in his role as a moderator. He was also a deacon.
"Farm, church and family - those are the things that were important to him, " said his son.
Survivors also include his wife of 59 years, Margie Clifford Rainey; a son, James Darryl Rainey of Harrison County; a daughter, Donna Clifford of Harrison County; a half-sister, Evelyn Huston of Eaglewood, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 Friday night at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Sunrise Christian Church, Richland Baptist Church or Antioch Christian Church.
Carlton J. Adams, 86, of Dayton, died Thursday at Northern Kentucky HealthSouth, Edgewood.
He was a driver with Nationwide Paper and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Virginia Adams, died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Adams of Dayton; a daughter, Carol Strong of Dayton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Edward Biddle, 81, of Verona, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired truck driver with Eagle Trucking Co.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Belew Biddle; sons, Paul Biddle and Ernie Biddle, both of Walton, Pete Biddle and Jimmy Biddle, both of Verona, Spencer Biddle of Georgetown, Tommy Biddle of Union, Leon Biddle of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Buford Biddle of Frankfort; daughters, Joan Black and Vista Ratliff, both of Verona, Ann Carol Kelly of Union; Nellie Wainscott of Florence, Helen Holder and Roberta Hegge, both of Independence and Linda Sharon of Fort Thomas; 38 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Florence Cemetery.
Floyd Brandenburg, 81, of Hebron, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a truck driver and a farmer. His wife, Minnie Brandenburg, died in 1993.
Survivors include sisters, Bertha Hall of Lexington, Alma Watson of Huber Heights, Ohio, Anna Kidd of Hebron and Orena Dunn of Kettering, Ohio; and a brother, Langley Brandenburg of Germantown, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Dayton, Ohio, Memorial Park.

Lona Combs, 83, of Wilder, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a former employee of the Newport Adult Learning Center and Coney Island Amusement Park. Her husband, Britt Combs, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Joyce Walasek of Blaine, Wash., and Cathy Caudill of Cincinnati; a brother, Frank Sheperd of California; a sister, Icy Johnson of Knox County, Ohio; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Delsie Preston Craig, 85, of Ludlow, died at 12:23 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Springs, Erlanger.
She was a retired presser with Fletchhiemer's Uniform Co. and a member of First Baptist Church of Ludlow.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice L. Nutini of Villa Hills; a son, E. Eugene Craig of Reston, Va.; a sister, Thelma Vaught of Junction City; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Robert J. Kuehneman, 72, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired mining engineer with the Black River Lime Co., Butler, and a former treasurer and member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dry Ridge.
He was a past president of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and Galena, Ill., Lion Club, a former member of the Galena Elks Club and the former owner of Deergath Bar and Motel, Woodruff, Wis.
He also was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Broshot Kuehneman; sons, Gary R. Kuehneman of Whitewater, Wis., Carl J. Kuehneman of Lexington and Thomas A. Kuehneman of Hebron; a daughter, Jody Patton of Hamilton, Ohio; a sister, Sharon Delaney of Pawley's Island, S.C.; a brother, Kenneth Kuehneman of Woodruff; four grandchildren and one step-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in cemetery of the Pines, Boulder Junction, Wis.

Willena May s, 81, of Butler, died today at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

Minnie Monroe, 96, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of Short Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Her husband, James Lang Monroe, and a son, James E. Monroe, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Margie Jenkins of Monroe, Ohio, and June Gaitskill of Williamsburg, Ohio; a sister, Kathryn Race of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Short Creek Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Short Creek Cemetery.

Michael Bryan Nelson, 21, of Cincinnati, died Monday at Glencare Center in Cincinnati. He was disabled.
Survivors include his father, William Baker Sr. of Dry Ridge; his mother and stepfather, Rebecca Lilly and Rick Matthews of Dry Ridge; brothers, David Nelson Jr., William Baker Jr. and Anthony Baker, all of Dry Ridge; and grandparents, Juanita Lilly of Elgin, Tenn., and Linda Baker of New Richmond, Ohio.
No services are planned. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.
Ruth C. Otten, 77, of Villa Hills, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert Otten; a son, John Otten of Fort Wright; daughters, Cindy Bultman of Huntersville, N.C., and Julie Spaulding of Burlington; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

William H. Throckmorton, 71, of Maysville, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at his home.
He was a machine operator with Brownings EPT in Maysville, and was an employee of Jockey International, Maysville, and the Daily Independent newspaper in Maysville.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Throckmorton; daughters, Brenda Barbour of Plumville and Marsha Throckmorton of Maysville; a brother, David Throckmorton of Maysville; a sister, Alice Price of Washington; and three granddaughters.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, J. D. Wooten, died in 1997.
