MRS. RATHBUN DIES AT HOME TUESDAY, 5 P.M.
She Was Native of Hancock County, Illinois, Carthage Being Her Place of Birth in 1856
Mrs. Pauline Thurber Rathbun died at her home, 2001 Bank street, Tuesday at 5:00 p. m. following an illness of five weeks duration. Her death was caused by a complication of diseases. She was seventy years old at the time of her death.
Paulina Thurber was born at Carthage, Illinois, August 3, 1846, and was the daughter of Mr.andMrs. Thomas Thurber. Her marriage to James R. Bryant took place at Carthage on March 16, 1873. Mr. Bryant preceded his wife in death some years ago. Four years ago Mrs. Rathbun came to Keokuk with her second husband William Rathbun, whom she married
at Memphis, Mo., to keep house for the children of her daughter, Mrs. Dover Drummond, following her death. Mrs. Rathbun was a member of the Christian church.
Surviving Mrs. Rathbun are her husband, William Rathbun and seven children: William Bryant, W. H. Bryant, Joseph W. Bryant, and L. V. Bryant, all of Keokuk; T. Frank Bryant, of Rutledge, Mo., Charles Bryant, of Memphis, Mo., and James Bryant, of Boulder, Colo; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Ward of Memphis, Mo., Mrs. Laura Roasa, of Granger, Mo., and Mrs. Harriet Ralph, of Memphis, Mo., twenty-eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
The body will be taken to Memphis, Mo., Thursday morning and interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Knox county, Mo.

Riley Bryant
A funeral for Riley V. Bryant, 69, of 614 A St., who died Sunday at Keokuk Area Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at DeJong's Funeral Home with the Rev. R. Terry Halstead officiating.
Burial will be in the Buena Vista Cemetery.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Relatives will meet friends from 7-9 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.
He was born May 5, 1910 at LaHarpe, Ill., the son of Walter and Ethel Converse Bryant. He married
Ruth Alice Phillips in 1930.
He has been a resident of Keokuk since 1917. He was employed at Foote-Mineral Co. for 34 years until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include daughters Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Gosnell of Montrose, Mrs. Ronald (Martha-Susie) Fuller of Quincy, Ill., and Mrs. Paul (Nancy) Bunnell of Argyle; son Edward of Montrose; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, five brothers and two sisters.

Three Now Dead In Monday Fire
Death toll in the tragic fire at the Leo Bryant home, 2018 Missouri Street, early yesterday, reached three today with the deaths of Mrs. Leo Bryant and another grandchild, Shirley Jean, four year old sister of Barbara Ann Hagmeier, who was dead when carried out of the burning residence. Shirley Jean died last night at ??:?? O’clock in St. Joseph hospital and Mrs. Bryant died at ??:?? O’clock this morning in the hospital.
The condition of both was reported as serious yesterday morning as a result of severe burns.

The grandmother had carried Shirley Jean and her little brother Clyde out of the flaming house and in addition to burns on her arms and face, must have inhaled smoke, which contributed to her death.
The little girl was also deeply burned on her arms, hands, and face.
Clyde, the two year old boy, escaped without injury.
Barbara Ann, five, is believed to have suffocated in the smoke filled house and was dead when carried out by her aunt, Mrs. Mary Jump.
The body of Mrs. Bryant has been taken to DeJong’s funeral home. The funeral arrangements and the obituary will be published later.

Shirley Jean Hagmeier was born in Keokuk, November 19, 1946, the daughter of Clyde and Verna R. Bryant Hagmeier.
She, like her sister Barbara, is in the Greaves mortuary where funeral services for both will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Alva T. Browning officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove cemetery.
Surviving besides the parents are the brother, Clyde, and the grandparents, Leo Bryant and Mr. and Mrs. William Hagmeier.

Funeral service for Mrs. Bryant to be Thursday.
Funeral service for Mrs. Leo V. Bryant, who died in St. Joseph hospital at 8:33 a.m. yesterday as a result of burns suffered in her home at 2018 Missouri Street, Monday, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in DeJong’s funeral home.
Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Rose Elizabeth Dalton was born June 17, 1888 in Memphis, Mo., the daughter of John and Olive Dalton. She had been a resident of Keokuk for 37 years.
On June 4, 1909, in Memphis she married
Leo Vernon Bryant. She attended the Salvation Army services.
Surviving are two sons, James Carroll Bryant of Keokuk and Ward R. of Memphis, five daughters, Mrs. Freda Rose of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Mary Jump and Mrs. Helen Howard of Keokuk, Mrs. Eva Burdette of Alexandria, rural route, and Mrs. Verna Hagmeier Mitchell of Keokuk, a sister, Mrs. Blanche Paris of Fairfield, three brothers, Lester Dalton of La Crescenta, Calif., Carroll Dalton of Keokuk and Fred Dalton of Memphis; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were two brothers, two sisters, three children, and six grandchildren, including the two Hagmeier children whose deaths were caused by the fire Monday.

Ruth Alice Bryant, 84, of 111 South Second St., Keokuk, died at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
She was born on March 5, 1913, in Barry, Ill., the daughter of William S. and Pearl M. Hatfield Phillips. She married
Riley V. Bryant on Jan. 19, 1930, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1980.
Survivors include: a son, Edward Riley Bryant and his wife, Alice, of Montrose; three daughters, Ruth Elizabeth Gosnell and her husband, Kenneth, of Montrose, Martha Susie Fuller and her husband, Ron, of Quincy, Ill., and Nancy Lorena Bunnell and her husband, Paul, of Argyle; four sisters, Gladys Butler and Gwen Wade, both of Keokuk, Julian Rash of Oregon and Bessie Kite of Farmington; a brother, David Phillips of Williamstown, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She had lived in Keokuk since 1930. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a member of the C.W.F. and the Jennie Lee Sunday School class.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating.
Burial will be in Buena Vista Cemetery.
Visitation is after 1 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

Heart Attack Fatal To S. A.
Bryant, A Native of Novelty
And Oklahoma Banker
S. A. Bryant, a native of Novelty, but of late years chairman of the board of the Farmers National Bank of Cushing, Okla., died there in a hospital Tuesday night, Jan. 3, 1961. He suffered a coronary occlusion Dec. 15 from which he never recovered. He was 76 years old.
Funeral services were at 2 o'clock last Thursday afternoon in the Christian Church there, conducted by the Rev. Harold Abraham, and burial was there in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Bryant and a daughter, Mrs. Dennie 0. Cubbage, and two sons, Edward G. and Richard A. Bryant, all of Cushing, survive. There are left also nine grandchildren.
Mr. Bryant, a Democrat, had lived in the Cushing community since 1917, was a member of that state's Board of Regents of Higher Education, to which office he was appointed by Gov. Johnston Murray in 1954, was a former member of the Oklahoma City Branch of the Federal Bureau Bank and also was a past president of the Oklahoma Bankers Association, and served for a period of three years on the Council of the American Bankers Association.
Active in civic affairs, also Mr. Bryant was the first president of the Cushing Lions Club and later joined the Rotary Club. He was a Mason.
In addition to banking, Mr. Bryant had extensive farming and livestock interests. He went to Oklahoma in 1906, shortly after his marriage to Miss Mary Glahn of Leonard. Stephen A. Bryant was born Jan.11, 1884, in Novelty. The first home in Oklahoma was in Cleveland, where Mr. Bryant was in the cotton and banking business.
