Matthew Valentine, worked variety of jobs
Matthew "Poppy" Valentine - a bricklayer, professional gambler, racehorse owner and former Bromley council member - died Thursday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was 68.
Mr. Valentine of Bromley thoroughly enjoyed life and had an ability to spread the joy to everyone he touched, said his son, Ronald Valentine of Florence.
"He attracted people. He was very fun to be around, " he said.
He learned early to deal with sorrow, but search for happiness. His mother was killed when he was a child, and he was raised by his sister, the late Margie Gosney, in Milford.
He served in the Army in Korea and came home to become a policeman, the first of an array of jobs. He was a business agent for the Teamsters Union, ran parking concessions at the Lookout House and Beverly Hills nightclubs, and was a brick mason, working for Drees Homes and other builders in Cincinnati.
"My dad always had two or three jobs going at one time, " said Ronald Valentine. "He had kids to support and he loved to gamble."
Mr. Valentine won trophies as a blackjack player in Atlantic City and Las Vegas and owned several race horses. In 1992 he won $100, 000 in the Ohio Lottery.
In his early years his nick name was "Matty, " but he proudly traded that in for "Poppy" after he became a grandfather.
He and his wife, Scharline Smiley Valentine, had five children. A son, Larry, died soon after birth. Another son, Gary, died as an adult from a pulmonary condition. A daughter, Marcella Cobb, died after a long battle with cancer.
"My dad was the strong type, but when it came to his family he was very emotional, " said Ronald Valen tine. "He taught us that you could be a man and cry."
In the late 1980s, he was elected to Bromley City Council, vowing to fight for residents' rights against a petroleum plant on Ky. 8.
"He got them to restrict pumping times to control the noise, " his son said.
Mr. Valentine served two terms on Council.
He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis last summer.
