Newport's James Deaton, 'backbone of the family'
James Deaton was a family man with much to be proud of.
A niece, Irene Deaton, was the mayor of Newport. And a nephew, Don Johnson of Fort Thom as, was a state senator.
However, Mr. Deaton was proud of his entire family, said a granddaughter, Terry Schrode of Newport.
"He was a loving and caring person. He was willing to lend a hand to help someone out, " Miss Schrode said.
Mr. Deaton, 87, of Newport, died at noon Saturday at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
He was a retired bottler with 7-Up Bottling Co. in Cincinnati and a member of Immanuel Nazarene Church in Highland Heights.
His wife, Odie Johnson Deaton, died in 1980. Their daughter, Faye Hutton of Newport, died in 1980.
Mr. Deaton, who grew up in Newport, enjoyed going to church and also campaigned for his relatives.
He had a good sense of humor and was the "backbone of the family, " Miss Schrode said.
"He was an inspiration to everyone. Everyone who knew him would say, 'Hi Granpa, how are you today'? The highlight of his life was his three great-great grandbabies, " Miss Schrode said.
Mr. Deaton is also survived by six grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Nazarene Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlen kamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Mary C. Borman, 74, of Erlanger, died Sunday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Wilmore Alice Caylor, 85, of Highland Heights, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Charles Caylor, died in 1972.
Survivors include sons, Donald Caylor of London, David Caylor of Baltimore, Richard Caylor of Elsmere and Dennis Caylor of Independence; daughters, Jo Ann Conner of Newport and Belinda Romito of Alexandria; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Southgate, is handling arrangements.
Leona Purnell Coleman, 79, of Burlington, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Will iamstown.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Will iamstown.
Aaron E. Denham, 68, of Newport, died Monday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Tillie Y. Yost Held, 92, of Lakeside Park, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, Pa.
She was an office manager with the James West Lumber Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Harry W. Held, died in 1986.
Survivors include a son, Michael E. Held of East Stroudsburg.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Hubert House, 83, of Corinth, died Monday at Grant Manor, Williams town.
Arrangements are pending at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth.
Pamela J. Knox Hudson, 56, of Villa Hills, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday at her home.
She was a banquet worker with the Westin Hotel, Cincinnati, and a volunteer with Northern Kentucky Seniors Citizens.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Hudson; a daughter, Stephanie Hudson of Villa Hills; and a son, Michael Hudson of Crescent Springs.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Flossie Southworth Mefford, 91, of Corinth, died Sunday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton.
She was a member of New Columbus Baptist Church, Owen County. Her husband, Ward Mefford, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Lois Skirvin of Florence; a son, Gerald Samuel Mefford of Corinth; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Johnson's Funeral Home, Georgetown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery, Owen County.

Bessie Lee Ollier, 94, of Florence, died Saturday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Martin Ollier Jr. of Loveland, Ohio, Donald Ollier of Brooksville and Joseph Ollier of Erlanger; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Loretta Robinson, 63, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a cook with Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence, and a member of Gathering Place Christian Church, Boone County. Her husband, Letcher Robinson, died in 1989.
Survivors include sons, Brian L. Robinson of Burlington, Rickie A. Robinson of Titusville, Fla., and Tharon W. Robinson of Latonia; her mother, Evalece Gross of Florence; brothers, Darrell Gross, Kirt Gross, Norman Ray Gross and Ralph D. Gross, all of Florence; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Delmar L. Story, 78, of Augusta, died at 11:31 a.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired employee of Dr. Scholl's.
Survivors include a brother, Dale Story; and sisters, Serina Curtis, Ilene Kiskaden and Irene Hennessey.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Brooksville.
Frank Bernard Thomas, 82, of Gretna, La., formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Meadowcrest Hospital, New Orleans.
He was a retired salesperson for Blueprint Supplies and Equipment, a member of St. Joseph Church and VFW Post No. 3121, both in New Orleans, and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Lyles Thomas; a son, Frank Bernard Thomas Jr.; a daughter, Sheila Thomas Looney; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was Saturday at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, New Orleans. Burial was in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans.

Donnie Ray Weisbrodt, 63, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Lenoxburg, died Monday at his home.
He was a welder with New Orleans Ship Yards, a member of Lenoxburg Baptist Church and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Weisbrodt; a daughter, Linda Walker of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; sons, Donnie Ray Weisbrodt and Larry Weisbrodt, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Delano Weisbrodt of Green Cove Springs; stepsons, Joseph Hickey of Florence and Jeff Hickey of London, England; brothers, James Weisbrodt of Winter Haven, Fla., Gene Weisbrodt of Orlando, Fla., and Robert Weisbrodt of Loveland, Ohio; sisters, Norma Colvin of Melbourne, Fla., and Bonnie Free of Florence; six grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery.
