Leona 'Snooks' Coleman, ran general store
Leona "Snooks" Purnell Coleman was a successful businesswoman - attentive to her family and customers.
Mrs. Coleman, of Williamstown, operated Coleman's General Store in Independence from 1959 to 1970. She also was an administrator at Ashland Terrace assisted living facility in Lexington.
As the owner of Coleman's General Store, she became known for the way she prepared chicken, cole slaw, baked beans and potato salad, said a daughter, Emily Shelton of Burlington.
"She was the sweetest person. No matter what, she never lost that sweet disposition, " Mrs. Shelton said.
Mrs. Coleman, 79, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown.
She farmed and was a member of Covenant Christian Church in Newport. Her husband, Harry H. Coleman, died in 1963.
Mrs. Coleman was born in Grant County, but spent much of her life in Independence. An uncle gave her the nickname "Snooks, " which was probably after a 1930s movie star, Mrs. Shelton said.
Mrs. Coleman encouraged her children to pursue their dreams and taught the values of hard work and treating people fairly, Mrs. Shelton said.
"People came from miles around to our store, " Mrs. Shelton said. "Our mother was very supportive, and she thought the world of her three children.
"She was also a dedicated Christian who made sure we were at church."
Other survivors include a son, Michael B. Coleman of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Mona Lazarus of Williamstown; sisters, Edna Mae Miller of Crestview Hills and Mary Frances Heilman of Harrison, Ohio; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Falmouth.

Violet Faye Haley Case Blankenship, 89, of Lexington, died at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday at Lexington Health Care Center. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth Case Clifton of Midway and Patricia Case Richards of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Brooksville Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville is handling the arrangements.
Mary C. Birkenhauer Borman, 74, of Villa Hills, died Sunday at her home.
She was a retired head cashier with Deli Direct. Sons, Steve Beierlein and Thomas Beierlein, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Borman; sons, Frank Beierlein of Burlington and Jeff Beierlein of Walton; Kathy Norris of San Antonio, Judie George of Villa Hills, Lesa Duddey and Jackie Coker, both of Independence, and Kim Borman of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers, Murdock Birkenhauer and Herbert Birkenhauer both of Alexandria, Richard Birkenhauer of Newport and Joseph Birkenhauer of Latonia; sisters, Charlotte Volpenhein of Southgate, Agnes Mader of Alexandria, Clotilda Prince of Philadelphia, Esther Scarp of Pompano Beach, Fla., Ethel Hills of Phoenix and Eleanor Seger of Highland Heights; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Aaron Denham, 68, of Newport, died Monday at his home.
He was a self-employed electrical contractor with A&E Electric Co., a member of Disabled American Veterans and Lawler Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Gill of Newport; a sister, Blanche Blaut of Newport; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Dayton, Ohio, National Cemetery.

George Edward Griggs, 43, of Florence, died at 9:34 a.m. Monday at his home.
He was a hardwood floor finisher with The Floor Doctor.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Herbol Griggs; sons, George Rider Griggs, Charles Griggs and Steven Griggs, all of Florence; a brother, Jimmy Griggs of Dayton; stepsisters, Betty Seibert of Ludlow and Brandy Strange of Dayton; and a stepbrother, Bobby Strange of Newport.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with an additional memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Temple, Melbourne. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Barbara H. Hoepker, 63, of Edgewood, died at 8:31 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a nurse's aide with Spears Hospital, Dayton.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond B. Hoepker; daughters, Terri M. Williamstown of Taylor Mill, Donna Helton of Edgewood and Regina Gail Logston of Covington; sons, Mark Grimm of Lexington and David Hoepker of Covington; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Hubert Claude House, 83, of Berry, died Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.
He was a farmer and a factory worker with Bundy Tubing of Cynthiana. He was a member of Stringtown Christian Church in Cordova and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Hill House; a son, Robert C. House of Greenville; daughters, Cheryl Lyn Peddicord of Weems, Va., and Melissa J. Theyken of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Stringtown Christian Church, Cordova. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth, and from 10 a.m. Fri day until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Thompson-Robinson Cemetery, Cordova.

Christine T. McCracken, 78, of Brooksville, died Monday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion Methodist Church, Bracken County.
Survivors include her husband, Donald K. McCracken Sr.; a daughter, Bonnie Sue McCann of Alexandria; a son, Donald McCracken Jr. of Brooksville; half-brothers, Clinton Haley and Leo Haley, both of Powersville; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Bracken County.

Leatha J. Montgomery, 84, of Covington, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a retired ward clerk with Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a son, Charles L. Herron of Covington; daughters, Willa M. Jackson of Covington and Vivian J. Williams of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Bessie Lee Ollier, 94, of Florence, died Saturday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Martin Ollier Sr., died in 1977. A son, Robert E. Ollier, died in 1995.
Survivors include sons, Martin Ollier Jr. of Loveland, Ohio, Donald Ollier of Brooksville and Joseph Ollier of Erlanger; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Linzy Lynn Satchwell, child of Terry Lynn Satchwell and Jodie Renee Gould of Warsaw, was stillborn Sunday at Nortons Hospital, Louisville.

Charles Elmer "Pete" Swartz, 84, of Mount Olivet, died at 3:58 p.m. Monday at Maysville Extended Care Center.
He was a farmer and a member of Forman's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Devon Swartz; a son, Roy W. Swartz of Maysville; a sisters, Margureit Howard of Maysville; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick.

Ora Webster, 80, of Florence, died at 3:48 p.m. Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.
She was a retired cashier with the Kroger Co., Covington, and a member of Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park. She was a pianist and organist with Latonia Christian Church and Lakeside Christian Church, and taught Sunday school at both churches.
Survivors include sisters, Polly Cooper and Louise Peebles, both of Burlington, and Elsie Moore of Taylor Mill; nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Ms. Webster bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Sadie Sue Cummins Wright, 50, of Mount Olivet, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a farmer and a member of Milford Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Seaman Wright Sr.; sons, Kenneth Wright II and Luther Wright, both of Mount Olivet; and sisters, Ruby Whiteman of Indiana and May Blaut of Mount Olivet.
