McKenzie Fisk, owned two gas stations

McKenzie Lee Fisk believed in taking life in stride.

He operated his own Standard gas station on Madison Avenue in Covington before World War II. Then he joined the Army and served his time.

During his lifetime he also ran another gas station in Erlanger and farmed.

He always maintained a sense of humor and cherished his family, friends and customers, said his wife of 51 years, Marjorie Fisk.

"He was a very kind and gentle person who treated everyone alike, " Mrs. Fisk said. "He was a hard-working person and honest in his dealings."

Mr. Fisk, 88, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

He was a retired self-employed manager with Standard Oil Co. in Covington and Erlanger, a farmer, and a member of Goshen Christian Church.

Mr. Fisk was a native of Kenton County. He enjoyed fishing and playing shuffleboard and being around children, his wife said.

"Children would come to him, and he was kind and gentle with them. I never saw Mac angry, " Mrs. Fisk said.

"He loved to help people and did a great deal for his family."

Besides his wife, Mr. Fisk is survived by a sister, Etta Bell Fisk of Batesville, Ind.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Olwen P. Berry, 92, of Covington, died Friday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

Survivors include a son, William Slaughter of Covington; daughters, Myrna Baker and Arkansas and Leslie Lightfoot of Newport; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Edith Thelma Blumer, 85, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a member of Erlanger Christian Church. Her husband, Edward G. Blumer, died in 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Bard of Germantown, Tenn.; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Erlanger Christian Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, is handling arrangements.

Rosa Hays, 90, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at Ivy Woods Care Center, Cincinnati.

She was a member of Old Regular Baptist Church. Her husband, Adam Hays, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Amy Payne of Cincinnati, Edith Smith of Hamilton, Ohio, and Shirley Snow of Erlanger; sons, Bill Hays and Adam Hays Jr., both of Columbus, Ohio, and Charles Hays of Mechanic Falls, Maine; a sister, Olivia Reed of Wayland; brothers, James Vanderpool, Robert Vanderpool and Elliott Vanderpool, all of Plymouth, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Pendleton County.

John F. Howard, 65, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a motel clerk and manager of Colonial Inn Motel, Covington. His wife, Mildred M. Howard, died on Jan. 12.

Survivors include a son, Gene Howard of Covington; a daughter, Tina Louise Villanueva of Covington; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

James T. Hudgins, 70, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Harrison County, died Tuesday at Ephram McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

He was a retired employee of Trane Co., a member of St. Edward Church in Cynthiana, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Richie Hudgins; a son, David Hudgins of Junction City; a daughter, Theresa Nowlin of Harrodsburg; a brother, George Hudgins of Cynthiana; and two grandsons.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Edward Church, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial will be in St. Edward Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Mary E. Johnson, 62, of Foster, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

Survivors include her husband, Claude Johnson; daughters, Felicia Rayburn of Foster, Rose Peabody of Newport and Michele Bass of Foster; a son, Bill Turpin of Newport; stepdaughters, Denise Koehler of Cleveland, Bonita Marshall of Villa Hills and Claudette Howard of Sparta; 13 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Woodhaven Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.

Wanda L. Mardis, 70, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Raymond R. Mardis, died in 1987.

Survivors include a son, David A. Hall of Newport; a daughter, Lois Faye Smith of Southgate; sisters, Paula Giles of Madison, Ind., Ruth Grimes of Lexington and Helen Plummer of Detroit; brothers, Doug Plummer of Cathedral City, Calif., Jim Plummer of Richmond and Tom Plummer of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Dobbling Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Lila A. Martin, 85, of Covington, died Tuesday at her home.

She was a machine operator with Equitable Bag Co. Her husband, Lionel Martin, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Vernon Martin of Covington; daughters, Leah Brickey of Florence and Doris Anderson of Erlanger; brothers, Charles Tomlin of Ludlow and Howard Tomlin of Erlanger; a sister, Anna L. Terry of Ashland; 13 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Nancye Mildred Candy Martin, 92, of Maysville, died at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday at Vanceburg Rehabilitation Health Care Center.

She was a teacher with Augusta School and a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta. Her husband, Claude Marlon Martin, died in 1970. A son, Daniel Meier Martin, died in 1997.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Jordan of Maysville and Anna Ferne Thomas of Dumfries, Va.; a son, Alfred Mulroney Martin of Alexandria; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, 3000 E. Fourth St., Augusta, Ky. 41002.

George "Whitey" Miller, 83, of Fort Mitchell, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington.

Larry W. Milner, 60, of Lake Park, Ga., formerly of Grant County, died at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Jacksonville, Fla.

He was a part owner and manager of Lake Park Truck Center and a former Grant County building contractor. He was a member of Lystra Church of Christ, Corinth.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki Jones Milner; daughters, Melissa Bledsoe of Harrison, Ohio, and Melony Stambaugh of Edgewood; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Burton of Dry Ridge; a stepson, Charles Burton of Corinth; a brother, Wendell Milner of Corinth; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Darlene R. Monroe-Beason, 47, of Southgate, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a nurse.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Beason; her mother, Helen Monroe of Highland Heights; and a sister, June Steidle of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Emory Gene Saylor, 57, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.

Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden.

James L. Willenbrink, 59, of Covington, died Monday at Columbia Health Care Center, Cincinnati. He was disabled.

Survivors include a daughter, Stacey Willenbrink of Olive Hill; brothers, Willie Willenbrink of Dry Ridge and Bobby Willenbrink of Cincinnati; and a sister, Loretta Duble of Covington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at TLC Funeral Services, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Otis Wolfinbarger, 91, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retired crane operator with Newport Steel and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. A son, Wayne Wolfinbarger, died in 2000. A daughter, Irene Wolfinbarger Charlton, died in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Rubie Ingram Wolfinbarger; daughters, Wilma Cavins and Peggy Updike, both of Dry Ridge, Juanita Stephenson of Crittenden and Peggy Updike of Dry Ridge and Darlene Childers of West Valley, Utah; sons, James Wolfinbarger of Fort Wroth, Texas, and Clayton Wolfinbarger of Demossville; 32 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
