George 'Tom' Lang, former mayor, florist

George "Tom" Lang, longtime mayor of Kenton Vale, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was 76.

Mr. Lang and his wife, Lucille Bowman Lang, moved to Kenton Vale in 1950, after they bought Jackson Florist, which had been founded by Mr. Lang's grandfather.

The young couple worked outside jobs while building the business, growing their own flowers in greenhouses and learning floral design.

"He was a go-getter, " said Mrs. Lang. "He was always looking out to see if he could help anybody.

"I don't know anyone who didn't like him, " she said. "He was very outgoing, and he loved a good joke."

He became active in the city, serving as a city trustee and a police judge before being elected mayor in the 1970s - a post he held until he resigned in 1995 to spend more time traveling.

He retired and sold the floral business about four years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Lang had toured Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, the Caribbean, Alaska and the Panama Canal. They frequently visited a son, Linny Lang, in Largo, Fla.
