Violet Richter, ran preschools
Before a preschool program existed in Florence, Violet Rose Richter made it her responsibility to start one at Hopeful Lutheran Church, where her husband served as pastor.
"She ran that program for ten years, " said Mrs. Richter's son, Elmer. "Before Florence had a kindergarten program, she was running the equivalent of a kindergarten program."
Mrs. Richter, 84, formerly of Florence, died Tuesday at Llanfair Retirement Community in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Richter ran the preschool programs while her husband served as pastor there until 1980. Her son says she always had a great love of children and that love drove her to return to school for her college degree relatively late in her life so that she could teach preschool.
"She was well into her mid-50s when she went back and got her college equivalency (diploma), " said her son. "She loved little children - they were part of her ministry. She was the kind of mom we need more of today - a disciplinarian. The kids loved her immensely, but nobody crossed her."
Her husband of more than 50 years, the Rev. Robert C. Richter, died in 1992.
