Inez Fardo, teacher, walking history book
Inez Fardo was a walking, talking history book for the granddaughter she raised fr om infancy.
"She said she navigated the Ohio River during the '37 flood to get to work in downtown Cincinnati, " said Mrs. Fardo's granddaughter, Vicki Joyner of Alexandria. "She remembers her dad walking a long way to get a newspaper to read about the Titanic going down.
"At the time she raised me, it was like 'Oh, here's one more story.' But now that I' m older I see that's so neat."
Mrs. Fardo, 98, of Grants Lick, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Mrs. Fardo taught many years ago in a one-room school house in California, Ky. Ms. Joyner said her grandmother's experience as a teacher made her stories of history all the more entertaining.
"By being a teacher, that added to it, " said Ms. Joyner.
Mrs. Fardo was the oldest living member of Grants Lick Baptist Church. She also taught Sunday school there for many years.
Survivors also include two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grants Lick Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials are suggested to Gideons International, P.O. Box 252, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

Ocieola Koky Beil, 69, of Tampa, Fla., died Wednesday at Town and Country Hospital, Tampa. She was a homemaker. Her sons, Charles W. Beil II, died in 1975, and Gregory M. Beil, died in 1989 and a daughter, Charlene M. Niceley, died in 1983.
Survivors include her son, Randy Beil of Senoia, Ga.; daughters, Peggy S. Beil of Tampa and Nancy Carlisle of Union; several brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
William H. Bocklage, 79, of Western Hills, Ohio, died Tuesday at Hospice of Cincinnati. He was a retired professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Oxbow Inc. and the Audubon Society.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jeanne Koop Bocklage of Western Hills; daughters, Cam Starrett of Los Angeles, Calif., Paula Steenken of Austin, Texas, and Dr. Therese Bocklage of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters, Sis Bell of Crestview Hills and Kay Steenken of Florence; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Antoninus Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Friday in the St. Antoninus Church Greeting Room. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Oxbow Inc., P.O. Charmagne Bowles, 44, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at at her home. She was an office manager with Catanzaro Foods, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her sons, Anthony Bowles and Christopher Bowles, both at home; daughter, Amanda Bowles at home; and sisters, Pam League of Hamilton, Ohio, Susan Battaglia of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Diane League and Karen League, both of Ludlow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the church. Dorothy Cassell, 72, of Park Hills, died at 1:32 p.m. Wednesday at her home.

Newton Gehring, 87, of Grant County, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

Ronnie C. Hoop, 39, of Newport, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a restaurant employee at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Survivors include his father, Edgar C. Hoop of Newport; mother, Wilma Stull of Newport; brothers, Daniel Hoop of Lincoln Park, Mich., Clarence Hoop of Butler and Paul Hoop of Newport; and sisters, Kathy Hoop of Newport and Rhonda Harrison of River Rouge, Mich.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Ben Louis Jackson, 57, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at his home. He was the custodian at Southside Elementary School, Cynthiana. He had also worked for Webber Farm Sausage and was a member of Unity Christian Church, Cynthiana.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki Jackson of Cynthiana; stepdaughter, Amanda Caswell of Cynthiana; sons, Bennie Ray Jackson of Gainesville, Fla., Dennis Jackson of Harrison County and Gary Jackson of Cynthiana; brothers, Danny Jackson of Arlington, Ind., Jasper "Pete" Jackson of Warsaw, Joseph Jackson of Independence and Bradford Jackson, Kirby Jackson Jr. and Donald Jackson, all of Cynthiana; sisters, Flora M. Donald E. Maines, 63, of Dayton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He wa a retired fork lift operator for Procter and Gamble.
Survivors include his wife, Millie Maines of Dayton; daughters, Kay Maines and Lori Maines; son, Donald E. Maines Jr.; stepdaughters, Darlene Bunger of Edgewood and Melinda Campbell of Independence; stepsons, Larry Raines of Newport, Paul Raines of Bellevue and Ed Raines of Taylor Mill; sister, Mary Andrews of Houston, Texas; brothers, Charles Maines of Bellevue, Clarence Maines of Alexandria and Irvin Maines and Richard Maines, both of Dayton; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

George Walker McClane, 80, of Alexandria, died Wednesday at his home. He was a race horse farm operator in Lexington. His wife, Norma McClane, preceded him death.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Hunt of Lexington; brothers, Charles McClane of Falmouth, Lige McClane of Piner and Tommy Jacobs of Newport; and sisters, Mary McClane of Mount Auburn, Stella Gosney of Newport, Martha McClane of Lexington and Lula Bell Utz, Tina Downard and Ruby Ducker, all of Butler.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. Friday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Weinel Family Cemetery.
Sarah Louise Meyer, 75, of Independence, died Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, Rembert Meyer, died in 1999 and a son, Rembert Stephen Meyer, died in 1966.
Survivors include her sons, David Meyer of Walton and Mark Meyer of Fort Mitchell; daughter, Karen Reach of Fairless Hills, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of services. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Ralph E. "Frenchie" Momper Sr., 64, of Independence, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired truck and cab driver and a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Momper of Taylor Mill; sons, Ralph E. Momper Jr. of Anderson, Ohio, and Randy Momper of Independence; daughters, Janet Noble of Elsmere, Lisa Newbill of Boise, Idaho, and Dawn Marie Momper of Cincinnati; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Fred Nippert Jr., 83, of Newport, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. He was an estimator for R.J. Beischel Company, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park, Montgomery Masonic Lodge No. 0094 F&AM and Indra Consistory Scottish Rite. His wife, Dorothy L. Nippert, died in 1986.
Survivors include his son, Fred H. Nippert III of Edwardsport, Ind.; daughters, Nancy Anne Young of Eau Claire, Wis., and Doryne Lynn Nippert of Edgewood; six grandchildren a nd two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Sarah Elizabeth Roberts Cox Rouse, 94, of Seal Beach, Calif., and formerly of Boone County, died Monday at her home. She was a former farmer and foster mother.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth Bradie Cox Treischman of Los Alamitos, Calif., Ruth Wade Cox Brunings of Richwood and Chatsworth, Calif., and Agnes Mary Cox Thielen of Huntington Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Grace Ryles, 87, of Anderson Township, Ohio, died Wednesday at Mount Washington Care Center, Anderson Township. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington. Her husband, Cecil Ryles, died in 1983 and a son, Vernon Ryles, died in 1967.
Survivors include her sons, Alex Ryles of Florence and Carl MArler of Edgewood; daughters, Carol Cummings of Hebron and Jean Perkins of Florence; brother, James Dykes of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Margie Dykes of Harlan and Dutch Doss of Birmingham, Ala.; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to First Church of Christ, 6080 Camp Ernest Road, Burlington, Ky. 41005.
Rosalene Taylor, 98, of Augusta, died Wednesday at Maysville Extended Care Facility, Maysville.

Betty Roberts Thomson, 68, of Cynthiana, died Monday at Vencor Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Grier Russell Thomson Sr. and a son, Joseph Allen Thomson, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sons, Grier Thomson Jr. of Georgetown and Scot Thomson of Ocala, Fla.; daughters, Margaret Buckler of Georgetown and Brenda Fryman of Cynthiana; brothers, Stewart Roberts of Telford, Pa., Richard Roberts, Harold Roberts, Ronald Roberts and William Roberts, all of Quakertown, Pa. and Franklin Roberts and Leonard Roberts, both of Sellersville, Pa.; sisters, Joyce Thompson, Judy Thomas, Peggy Orzel and Barbara Duna, all of Quakertown; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lawrenca "Abe" Waibel, 72, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a paper packer for the Nationwide Paper Company, Sharonville, Ohio an Army veteran of World War II, a member of The Teamsters Union and American Legion Post No. 203, Latonia.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Waibel of Newport; sons, Jimmy Waibel and Gary Waibel, both of Newport; daughter, Susan Mersfelder of Covington; brothers, Freddy Waibel of Claryville and Gilbert Waibel of Newport; sister, Jean Tabor of Owenton; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John C. White, 91, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired farmer; member of Florence Christian Church and the Lincoln County Cooperative Extension; and past president of the Lincoln County Farm Bureau and the Lincoln County 4-H Council.
Survivors include his wife, Nannie Estridge White of Florence; daughter, Nancy Wills of Florence; sister, Virginia White Stigill of Louisville; and two grandchildren.
