Earl J. Farrell Jr., 'loved being a doctor'
Pediatrician Earl J. Farrell Jr. took great pride in his work.
"He loved being a doctor, " said a son, Teig O. Farrell of Cincinnati.
"He was from that generation of pediatricians who still made house calls. If he ever had a seriously ill child, he took it personally. One holiday, he had a very sick child, and the easiest solution was to bring the child to our home to care for him."
Dr. Farrell, 78, of Fort Thomas, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He had a practiced in Newport for more than 35 years.
"We are still flattered by people coming up to us and reminding us that Dad was there doctor as a kid, " Mr. Farrell said. "He, a lot of times, would see the child grow up and have children of their own and be the pediatrician for that family as well."
Dr. Farrell was a member of the Fort Thomas Retired Business Men's Club and the American Medical Association.
He enjoyed fishing and traveling. Dr. Farrell loved being with his family.
"It was still a big treat for him when the family got together, " Mr. Farrell said. "He loved his grandchildren. He was a great man."
Dr. Farrell's wife, Rose L. Farrell, died in 1996.
Other survivors include his daughters, Mavourneen Miller of Lakewood, Colo., and Mary T. Elkins of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Daniel E. Farrell of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Sylvia Mae Banks, 72, of Florence and formerly of Ryland Heights, died at 7:55 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a retired beautician, a former member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Taylor Mill and a current member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Florence Park Care Center, 6975 Burlington Pike, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Thera E. "Buck" Brockman, 73, of Covington, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday at his home.

Ocieola Koky Beil, 69, of Tampa, Fla., died Wednesday at Town and Country Hospital, Tampa. She was a homemaker. Son Charles W. Beil II died in 1975 and son Gregory M. Beil died in 1989. A daughter, Charlene M. Niceley, died in 1983.
Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Beil; son, Randy Beil of Senoia, Ga.; daughters, Peggy S. Beil of Tampa and Nancy Carlisle of Union; several brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Mary Jo Beiting, 55, of Fort Thomas, died Friday at her home. She was a secretary for St. Anthony Church, Bellevue.
Survivors include daughters, Vicki Sampson and Beth Beiting, both of Fort Thomas; sons, Greg Beiting of Fort Thomas, Phil Beiting of Cincinnati and Steve Beiting of Oxford, Ohio; mother, Hilda Stader of New Baltimore, Mich.; sister, Adele Soulliere of New Baltimore; and three grandchildren.

Herschel Combs Sr., 73, of Owenton, died Thursday at his home. He was an employee of Kraft Foods, a farmer and a member of Remnant Baptist Church, Owen County. His wife, Christine Beckham Combs, died in 1981. His daughters, Ida Combs and Brenda Smith, grandsons, Herschel "Bubby" Combs and Ty Combs, and great-grandsons, Dustin Moore and Joshua Moore, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Norman Combs, Herschel Combs and Clarence Gaines, all of Owenton; daughters, Elizabeth Moore and Ruby Carmack, both of Owenton; brothers, Ceazor Combs of Owenton and Ottis Combs of Louisville; sisters, Helen Duff of London, Martha Abbott of Sulfur, Ethel Lynn of Pleasureville and Alice Baugh of Henry County; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Helen Bernice Davis, 76, of Ryland Heights, died Thursday at Highlands Nursing Care Center, Fort Thomas. She was a retired clerical receptionist for R. L. Polk and Modern Furniture. Her husband, Elmer Davis, died in 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Simmons of Ryland Heights; brother, Bernard Franklin Cornelius of Cincinnati; sisters, Frances Martin of Covington, Anita Ruth McLafferty of Florence and Deborah Crouch of Ryland Heights; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from from 8:30 a.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Newton P. Gehring, 87, of Crittenden, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired engineer and inventor with Gehring Engineering. His wife, Sara Jane "Kate" Clarke, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Newton A. Gehring of Crittenden and Douglas C. Gehring of Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Sara Pauline Snyder of Crittenden; sisters, Jeanette Conklin of Niles, Ohio, and Viola Dailey of Ravenna, Ohio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mildred P. Gordon, 84, of Fort Wright, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Wood Crest Manor, Erlanger. Her husband, Orvil Gordon, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Teerers of Ludlow and Joyce Meekes of Florence; son, Eugene Zornes of Venice, Fla.; stepsons, Don Gordon of Butler and Lewis Gordon of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Sirgus Dishon of Florence; sisters, Marie Binder of Ponta Vetra, Fla., and Virginia Behymer of Edgewood; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leah Mary Heckel, 81, of Bellevue, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a secretary for Newport Steel, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of First Baptist Church, Cold Spring.
Survivors include stepson, Robert Heckel of Boone County; and stepdaughters, Nancy B. Heckel of Southgate, Patricia Doller of Cold Spring, Rose Meyer of Fort Thomas, Regina Wherle of Alexandria and Patricia Ziegler of Bellevue.

John Robert Kennedy, 79, of Elsmere, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired PBX installer for Cincinnati Bell, a member of the Communication Workers of America and a member of Simon Kenton American Legion Post. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kennedy; sons, Michael Kennedy of Batavia, Ohio, Danny Kennedy of Lexington, Dennis Kennedy of Fort Mitchell, Tim Kennedy of Edgewood and Pat Kennedy and Kevin Kennedy, both of Independence; daughters, Ellen Bacon of Hendersonville, N.C., Christina Daniel of Elsmere, Mary Chaney of Richwood and Kelly Rose of Hebron; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ernest Rudolf Lile, 80, of Latonia Lakes, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired lineman for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lile; daughter, Connie Kurtz of Williamstown; son, Robert Lile of Covington; stepdaughter, Rosemary Casey of Independence; and six grandchildren.

Glenn H. McCauley, 72, of Cynthiana, died Friday at his home. He was a farmer and a member of the Indian Creek Christian Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Bronze Star. He was also past president of the Burley Tobacco Advisory Council, 4-H Council and Harrison County 4-H Board, past FSA Committee Chairman, Farm Bureau Member, MMI Alumnus, and former Farm Bureau Board member.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Bradford McCauley; son Glenn H. "Mac" McCauley II of Harrison County; daughters, Pamela D. McCauley of Harrison County and Pattie Faulkner of Guilford, Conn.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
William F. McHugh, 92, of Erlanger, died Thursday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. He was a pipe fitter for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. His wife, Lucille McHugh, and a daughter, Joan Jayne, both died in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Stacey of Crestview Hills; brother, John McHugh of Portsmouth, Ohio; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. There will be no visitation.

Thomas J. "Monk" Middendorf, 74, of Verona and formerly of Fort Mitchell, died at 2:07 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a farmer and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Patricia Middendorf, died in 1985.
Survivors include a sister, Marice Obringer of the state of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Collier E. "Buster" Payne, 89, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired parts coordinator for Formica, retired custodian for Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence, and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. His wife, Beulah Marie Hogreffe Payne, died in 2000, and a son, Collier "Jackie" Payne, died in 1960.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Pettit of Independence; son, Robert Franklin Payne of Walton; brother, John Albert Payne of Bedford, Ind.; sister, Rosella Schadler of Independence; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sheila M. Phelps, 62, of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence G. Phelps, died in 1977.

Kenneth E. Russell, 67, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at his home. He was a Pinkerton Security Guard, volunteer at the VA Nursing Home, Fort Thomas, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Russell; son, Kenneth Russell Jr. of Edgewood; stepdaughter, Pamela Love Lorenz of Butler; stepson, Michael Love of Florence; sisters, Elizabeth Ervin of Alexandria, Nancy Hallman of Smithfield and Pauline Pemberton of Cape Coral, Fla.; brothers, Donald Russell of Dayton, James Russell of Falmouth and John Russell of Alexandria; and six grandchildren.

William Sally Jr., 77, of Highland Heights, died Thursday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights. He was a self-employed lumber mill laborer. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Highland Heights; VFW, Newport; and American Legion, Newport. He played country and bluegrass music on the guitar with Kitty Wells and Bill Monroe. A son, Hank William Sally, died in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Depew Sally of Independence; daughter, Mary Ella Kottmeyer of Highland Heights; brother, Thomas Sallee of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; sisters, Opal Glass of Florence and Virginia Sally of Hazard; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Kyra Fossett Stith, 97, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired insurance agent and a co-owner at Fossett Insurance Agency, a member of Falmouth United Methodist Church, Falmouth Women's Club and the Falmouth Democratic Women's Club. Her first husband, Edward Dudley Fossett, and her second husband, Carl Stith, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Edward L. Fossett of Cape Coral, Fla., James W. Fossett of Butler and William L. Fossett of Fulton; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Falmouth United Methodist Church.
