Charles 'Chad' Gurren Jr., Covington police sergeant
Charles A. "Chad" Gurren Jr. had a huge impact on his children.
"He raised us to be good people. He raised us all to believe in God, " said his youngest son, Bob Gurren of Erlanger.
Mr. Gurren, 81, of Covington, died at 12:05 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired sergeant with the Covington Police Department, having served for 19 years on the department.
"He was my role model throughout life, " said Charles "Bucky" Gurren, of Covington, now a captain on the Covington Police Department.
"He told me I was crazy to be a cop, " the younger Charles Gurren said with a laugh.
Both Charles and Bob Gurren talk about the fishing trips they took with their dad.
"My dad was big into fishing, " said Bob Gurren. "Many times as we all grew up we went on houseboat trips with him."
He was a World War II veteran and liked to talk about the war - the things the United States did right and the mistakes it made, said Bob Gurren.
As he got older, he also loved to talk politics, Charles Gurren said.
Mr. Gurren was a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. He was a member of the church Holy Name Society, Latonia American Legion Post No. 203 and Covington Lodge No. 1 Fraternal Order of Police. His wife, Evelyn Marie Griswold, died in 1996. A daughter also preceded him in death.
In addition to Bob and Charles Gurren, survivors include sons John Gurren of Cincinnati, Tim Gurren of Hebron and Frank Gurren of Union; daughters, Sharon Gurren of Crestview Hills and Terri Kessler of Cincinnati; a brother, Patrick Gurren of Largo, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. FOP services will be held this evening and at graveside. Carl Clifton "C. C." Clifford, 56, of Berry, died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lexington. He was a farmer and carpenter, and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include daughters, Shannon Sparks of Lancaster, Calif., and Dean Miller of Austin, Texas; sons, William Clifford of Cynthiana and Carl Clifford of Eubanks; his parents, William and Ruby Withers Clifford of Berry; his fiancee, Joanie Sosby; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
John "Jack" Flinker, 66, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was a retired service representative with General Electric, Cincinnati, and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Flinker; daughters, Robin Cornetet of Fort Thomas, Cindy Sidley of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Mary Dutiel of Crestview; sons, Norman Flinker of Covington, Stephen Flinker of Detroit and Joshua Flinker of Florence; his mother, Mary Flinker of Fort Thomas; and nine grandchildren.

Geoffrey Todd Goins, 24, of Fort Thomas, died at 3 a.m. Friday in Dayton, Ohio. He was a warehouse manager with D.R.G. Marketing, Florence.
Survivors include his parents, Dan and Pat Goins of Fort Thomas; a sister, Abigail Goins of Fort Thomas; grandparents, Irene Daugherty of Fort Thomas and Jewel Shields of Hudson, Fla.; and his fiancee, Lorie Steffen of Fort Thomas.

Charles J. Herman, 65, of Villa Hills, died Thursday in Gulfport, Miss.
He was a retired radar technician with the Federal Aeronautics Association and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. He was an usher at the church, and also served as a member of the Cathedral parish council and a member of the Garden Guild. He was a volunteer instructor with the American Association of Retired Persons' 55 Alive program and a past president of Dixie Chapter No. 1643 National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a vice president of the Fourth District Kentucky chapter of the organization, and a member of Villa Hills and Kenton County Senior golf leagues.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Adriano Bettinger Herman; a stepson, Mike Adriano of Crescent Springs; stepdaughters, Amy Berning of Cincinnati and Beth Portwood of Fort Wright; and six grandchildren.

Martha Jones, 92, of Erlanger, died Friday at her son's home in Erlanger. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence Jones, died in 1965.
Survivors include sons, Charles Ray Jones of Erlanger, Pete Jones of Crescent Springs and Jimmy Jones of Dry Ridge; daughters, Audrey William and Lucy Davis, both of Fort Wright, Goldie Johnson and Billie Hamilton, both of Independence, and Mildred Centers and Shirley Haas, both of Fort Mitchell; 25 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 14 great- great-grandchildren.

Richard G. Keckeley, 64, of Bellevue, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired office worker with Ace-Doran Hauling and Rigging Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
He was a member of the church Holy Name Society, worked bingo on Friday nights at the church and was active in the church's festivals. He formerly worked as a commercial writer with WKRC and WLW radio stations in Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Bickel Keckeley; and a brother, Donald Keckeley of Georgetown.

Elaine Knight, 80, of Covington, died at 8 p.m. Sunday at her home.

Mary Jane "Janie" Martin, 41, of Taylor Mill, died at 7:47 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a server with Cracker Barrel Restaurant, Florence.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Martin; stepsons, Brandon Martin of Taylor Mill and Shawn Martin of Florence; her stepfather, Charles Dobbs of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sisters, Monica Hollis of Florence, Donna Maltaner of Highland Heights and Nancy Longhauser of Daytona Beach; and brothers, Mark Maltaner of Newport, Greg Maltaner of Highland Heights and Pat Maltaner of Latonia.

Charles T. Moore, 99, of Bellevue, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Carroll E. "Danny" Parker, 87, of California, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired shear operator for the Interlake Steel Company, Newport. His wife, Virginia "Toots" Parker, died in 1984.
Survivors include his daughters, Emma Jean Neises of California and Linda Sansom of Highland Heights; sons, Bob Parker of California and Buddy Parker of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Donnelly Reis, of Fort Thomas, died at 1:25 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker.

Aleene Johnson Sipe, 84, of Salem, Mo., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at her home. She was a member of Falmouth Christian Church. Her husband, Frank Sipe, preceded her in death.

Asa Pitts Stallard, 89, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. He was a retired sales representative with Gulf Oil Co. and a member of Highlands Baptist Church, Louisville.

Donald E. Wood, 77, of Mount Olivet, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center in Mount Olivet. He was a farmer and a Navy veteran. His wife, Madeline Eitel Wood, died in 1989. A son, Barry Quackenbush, preceded him in death.
