Bleve Eaton, married
78 years
Bleve Eaton liked to joke about the secrets of a long marriage. It's understand able, because after 78 years of marriage, he and his wife, Ethel, probably got tired of all the questions on the subject.
But for the couple's daughter, Betty Buckler of Covington, Mr. Eaton passed on his favorite successful marriage secret freely and often.
"He wanted me to go to church more often than I did. He said it made a better marriage, " said Mrs. Buckler of her father, a member of Locust Pike Pentecostal Church in Covington. "He went every Sunday until he got sick."
Bleve Woodson Eaton, 96, of Covington, died Wednesday at his home.
Mr. Eaton met his wife-to-be when they were teenagers. In fact, the two had to elope because, as Mrs. Eaton put it, Bleve was considered "a bad boy" around the hills of her Laurel County home.
Over the course of almost eight decades of marriage, though, Bleve proved his worth. Mrs. Eaton said he was devoted to her, his children and his job as a Harlan County coal miner. He worked in the mines for 30 years until he was disabled by black lung disease.
