Ambrose Schwab kept family close together
Some might call it a family get-together, but to members of Ambrose Schwab's family it was simply known as Schwabbie Day.
Schwabbie Day was the third Sunday of each month. Family members would grab their tools and meet to work on house projects and have dinner. Mr. Schwab also used the day to perform community service for elderly friends.
"We got a lot done because nine people were working, " said Beth Stevens, a daughter from Orlando, Fla. "It really helped keep the family close."
Ambrose A. "Budsie" Schwab, 80, founder of Schwabbie Day, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
Mr. Schwab grew up Latonia, but built his own home in Edgewood in the early 1950s and was a resident there for more than 30 years.
He was a retired machine adjuster with Procter & Gamble, Ivorydale, and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving mostly in the South Pacific.
He was a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and helped count the collection from weekend services.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane Tabeling Schwab; daughter Pauline Stieby of Batavia, Ohio, Christine Bray of Villa Hills, Charlene Cahill of Verona; sons, Mike Schwab, Joe Schwab and Jeff Schwab, all of Edgewood, Rick Schwab of Burlington and Ray Schwab of Fort Wright; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be at 6 p.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. A reception will follow in the church undercroft. Mr. Schwab bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati Medical College.

John F. Bailey, 83, of Newport, died at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was retired from the Kroger Co. and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Eleanor Craig Bailey, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Pierce and Charlene Hoplins, both of Newport, Gloria Buckler of Falmouth and Debbie Stamper of Detroit; son, John Bailey Jr. of Newport; sisters, Mary Jane Mitts of Florence and Lillian Finders of Tampa, Fla.; brother, Fred Bailey Jr. of Florida; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Ruth Boyers, 91, of Covington, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia.
She was a retired secretary with Western & Southern Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Madison Avenue Christian Church, Covington. She was a Sunday school teacher with the church.
Survivors include a sister, Louella Boyers of Covington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry.

Geraldine Burkhardt, 56, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include a son, Ray-mond Gardinier of Fort Mitchell; brothers, Teddy Mazaneck of New Port Richie, Fla., and Tommy Hawk of Newburgh, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Amelia Jane Davidson, 92, of Cincinnati, died Wednesday at St. Margaret Hall Nursing Home in Cincinnati.
She was retired from Meyers Foods, Cincinnati.
Survivors include grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at noon Sunday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Bleve Woodson Eaton, 96, of Covington, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired coal miner in Harlan and a member of Locust Pike Pentecostal Church, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Eaton; daughters, Dorothy Lee of Richmond, Ind., Imogene Strong of Church Hill, Tenn., Betty Buckler and Mary Perry, both of Covington; a son, Robert Eaton of Florence; 23 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Bowling Funeral Home, London. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, and from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Bowling Funeral Home. Burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, London.
Geraldine Eckler, 77, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Betty Jane Holt, 76, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. A son, Pete Holt, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, James D. Holt Sr.; sons, James Holt Jr. of Covington, Johnny Holt and Melborne Holt, both of Independence; daughters, Diana Greene of Knightstown, Ind., Barbara Hensley of Richwood and Debra Howell of Latonia; brothers, Jack Reed of Florence and Jerry Reed of Pendleton County; sisters, Rose Powell of Covington, Norman Martin, Mary Laycock and Pat Riley, all of Erlanger, Garnet Brown of Ohio, Carol McNamara and Sandy Tierney, both of Florence; 34 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Esther A. Frost Holthaus, 82, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a retired bookkeeper and a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Arnold J. Holthaus, died in 1978.
Survivors include nieces, Sara Fudge, Mary Peltier and Anne Whedon, all of Cincinnati, and Cindy Spockert of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Services will be at noon Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation begins there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Viola R. Kramer, 61, of Alexandria, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Greg Kramer and Edward Kramer, both of Alexandria; daughters, Tina Heidelberg of Cold Spring and Brenda Spoonamore of Alexandria; brothers, Joseph Boesch of Alexandria and Henry Boesch of California; and seven grandchildren.

James A. Luster, 59, of Florence, died Wednesday at his home. He was a ramp service worker with TWA, a member of Erlanger Church of Nazarene and a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include a son, Christopher Luster of Elsmere; a daughter, Gina Marie Luster of Florence; sisters, Alma Luster and Nina Luster, both of Florence; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Monday.

Leta Mae Owen Perkins, 85, of Verona, died Wednesday at Dover Manor Nursing Home, Georgetown.
She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona. Her husband, Joe Sye Perkins Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Nona Rhodes of Lakeside Park, Ruth Tilley of Florence and Terri Hudgins of Georgetown; sons, Paul Perkins of Verona and Joe Perkins Jr. of Florence; brothers, Adrian Owen and Bernard B. Owen, both of Ghent; a sister, Norma Louise Lloyd of Carrollton; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Charles S. "Rosie" Rosenstiel, 84, of Edgewood, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired manager with Electrolux Corp. and a member of Erlanger Lions Club. His wife, Sibyl Rosenstiel, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Charles "Ronnie" Rosenstiel of Barbourville and Paul Rosenstiel of Erlanger; a daughter, Judith Ann Eubanks of Independence; and five grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Beaverlick Christian Cemetery.

Gene Taylor Underhill, 59, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at his home.
He was a self-employed tree trimmer and a member of the Elsmere Volunteer Fire Department. He aslo was a member of Elsmere Sportsmen's Club and American Legion Post No. 20, Elsmere.
Survivors include a daughter, Carmen Underhill of Erlanger; sons, Gene Underhill of Middletown, Ohio, and Andrew Underhill of Miamisburg, Ohio; a brother, Albert "Spanky" Underhill of Edgewood; sisters, Gilta Underhill Koop of Elsmere, Monte Underhill Webber of Cincinnati, Darlo Underhill Tanner of Union, Darlene Underhill Ramsey of Texas and Tonya Underhill Weese of Tampa, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Andrew Jacob Utley, son of Rebecca and Jacob Utley of Burlington, was stillborn Wednesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include grandparents, Earl and Sheila Utley of Union, and Judy Fields of Burlington; and great-grandparents, Rebecca Utley, Tom Taylor and Betty Taylor, all of Burlington, and Louella Lilly of Belleview.
