Geraldine Eckler, 77, proud of her family and flowers
Geraldine Eckler was proud of her family and the flowers she grew in the yard of her Florence home.
Mrs. Eckler, 77, a longtime clerk at the SuperX drug store in Florence, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Mrs. Eckler grew up in Northern Kentucky and met her first husband, Clyde Wolfe, while he was stationed at Fort Thomas during World War II.
They moved to West Virginia, where he worked as a railroad brakeman, and she became a butcher at a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. They raised three children.
"I never saw my mom and dad argue, " said a son, Jerry Wolfe of Cincinnati.
"The best thing they ever gave us was the love that was between my mom and dad and the love that was in our family.
"I never met a person who didn't like her."
Clyde Wolfe was killed in a railroading accident in the early 1960s, and a few years later the family moved to Florence, near Mrs. Wolfe's family.
She started working at the SuperX and later married
Roy Eckler, a retired railroader.
They lived in Florence, where Mrs. Eckler took pride in the flowers she grew in her yard. As a young girl she taught herself how to play the piano, and she maintained a joy in music throughout her life, Jerry Wolfe said.
As her children married
and started having families of their own, she remained their biggest supporter and their proud booster, her son said.
"My mother gave us unconditional love. She was always there for you, " he said.
She retired in the 1980s. A few years later, Roy Eckler died. She remained in the family home and continued to do her own yard work until she had her first stroke two years ago, her son said.
She was a member of Florence Baptist Church.
