William Brown, former principal at Piner Elementary School

William Robert Brown, former principal of Piner Elementary School and an educator for 49 years, died Thursday at his home in Morning View. He was 88.

Mr. Brown was born on a farm in Bracht Station in southern Kenton County. His life was a joint passion for teaching and farming.

He taught math and history at Piner Elementary School and later became principal. He also worked with the Kenton County Board of Education developing reading programs in the schools.

He was married twice - each time to a teacher. Betty Taul Brown died in 1974. His second wife, Hazel Brown, died in 1998.

Mae Martin met Mr. Brown 21 years ago, when she helped care for Hazel Brown, who had become ill. Mrs. Martin became a close friend and caretaker for both of the Browns.

"He loved kids, " she said. "They didn't have children, but he was always doing things for his students." Years after he retired, his students would still greet him on the street. "He was a quiet person, but he could be humorous, " Mrs. Martin said. "He was kind to everyone and very gracious."

During much of his teaching career, Mr. Brown raised cattle and grew crops on his farm.

"He loved to be around people, " said his niece, Kay Givin of Dry Ridge. "He loved Christmas. He was 88, but he still put lights on all the bushes and had a Christmas tree in every room."

He was a member of Crittenden Christian Church and the 4-H Club.

Besides his niece, other survivors include nephews, Robert Brown of Florence and Jim Hinsdale of Tyron, N.C.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Piner Elementary School, 2845 Rich Road, Morning View, Ky. 41063.

Wilson Lovett Anderson Sr., 79, of New Liberty, died Thursday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Louisville. He was a retired butcher for Statler Meat Packing, Columbus, Ind., a farmer and a member of New Liberty Second Baptist Church. A son, Robert Donell Anderson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Jerry Russell Anderson of Ghent, Joe Calvin Anderson of Sanders and Charles Richard Anderson; daughters, Shirlene Anderson and Elaine Anderson, both of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Liberty Second Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011.

Lazane Benne, 80, of Carrollton, died Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence Benne, died in March.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Jean Lips of Louisville; sons, Joseph Griffin of Fort Mitchell and Jules Benne of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; sister, Salene Denton of Sellersburg, Ind.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Carrollton Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton is handling the arrangements.

Kyle Lee Bennett, 36, of Lexington, formerly of Covington, died Thursday . He was a member of Southland Christian Church, Lexington.

Survivors include his son, Bryson Bennett of Ashland; parents, Ronald Lee and Louise Akron Bennett, both of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Kimberly Huemmer of Lexington; brother, Kevin Bennett of North Bend, Ohio; and grandmother, Nancy Mary Bennett of Lakeland.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at W. R. Mortuary-Southland, Lexington. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery. Alice Billings, 66, of Foster, died Thursday at Augusta Health Care Center, Augusta. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Billings of Foster; daughters, Sharon Hill of Corinth, Miss., and Margaret Marksberry of Florence; sister, Betty Ewing of Newport; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Persimmon Grove Cemetery, Persimmon Grove.

Kathryn Eva Callahan, 84, of Bromley, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert E. Callahan, died in 1995.

Survivors include her son, James R. Callahan of Covington; daughter, Edna M. Blaker of Bromley; sisters, Tina G. "Tiny" Jump of Covington and Blanche Worster of Edgewood; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Point Pleasant Church of Christ.

Dora Cummins, 92, of Silver Grove, died at 8:07 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Thomas Starr Cummins, and a daughter, Jacquelyn Goler, preceded her death.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Witte of Silver Grove; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Dallas Edward Fryman, 42, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport; died at 12:50 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a self-employed remodeler.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Fryman of Cincinnati; sons, Steven Fryman and Delmar Fryman, both of Cincinnati; daughter, Jennifer Fryman of Cincinnati; brothers, James Delmar Fryman of Williamsburg, Leo Fryman of Cincinnati and Doug Fryman of Bellevue; sister, Mary Kerr of Norwood, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Dallas Fryman Memorial Fund, c/o Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, 835 York St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Geneva "Jenny" Hornsby, 77, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Buena Vista Neighborhood Council, Newport, and Young at Heart Club, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, L. F. "Lew" Hornsby of Fort Thomas; son, Frank Horsby of Fort Thomas; daughters, Angela Linkugel of Alexandria and Marcia Hornsby and Rita Hornsby, both of Fort Thomas; sister, Helen Cornett of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Jerry Kiser, 55, of Florence, died at 8:43 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a supervisor and teacher with The Point, Covington, and a member of Life Abundant Ministries.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Hilligas Kiser; a stepson, Jeff Harris of Elsmere; a stepdaughter, Julie Harris of Florence; a brother, Charles Kiser of Florence; sisters, Gloria Morgan of Walton, Christine Hughes of Independence and Patty Stevens of Chicago; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon today at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. today. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Elizabeth Fossett Klaber, 90, of Morehead, formerly of Falmouth, died Thursday at her son's home in Morehead. She was a retired Pendleton County teacher. Her first husband, Ralph Fossett, died in 1977. Her second husband, Charles Klaber, died in 1996.

Survivors include her son, Dr. R. Thomas Fossett of Morehead; daughters, Beth Hutchinson of Barrington, Ill., and Margaret Fossett of Westerly, Rhode Island; sister, Virginia Rawlings of Lexington; brothers, George "Jack" Parsons of Lexington and Roy Parsons of Jasper, Ga.; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Falmouth United Methodist Church, Shelby Street, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Angie Locke, 64, of Verona, died Friday in a wreck on northbound Interstate 75 north of the Walton-Verona exit.

Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Edward Mitts, 57, of Bellevue, died Wednesday at his home. He was an optician with Diversified Ophthalmics. His wife, Kathleen Mitts, died in 1998.

Survivors include daughters, Heather Hopper and Rebecca Mitts, both of Bellevue; mother, Helen Mitts of Bellevue; sister, Eleanor Huff of Elsmere; and brother, Sonny Mitts of Newport.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Church, 320 Poplar St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.

Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling the arrangements.

James Osbourn, 79, of Walton, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired pipefitter with Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Local No. 392 in Cincinnati, and a eucharistic minister and member of the Holy Name Society of St. Cecilia Church, Independence. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and Independence Lions Club, and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Ann Pullen Osbourn, died in 1996.

Survivors include sons, Dave Osbourn of Covington, Jim Osbourn of Denver, Bob Osbourn of Cincinnati, Joe Osbourn of Crittenden and Don Osbourn of Walton; daughters, Sharon Dwelly of Walton, Mary Baum of Provo, Utah, Jane McNeese of Villa Hills and Nancy Osbourn of St. Louis; brother, Bert Osbourn of Louisville; sisters, Regina Proffit of Cincinnati, Sister Dorothy Osbourn of Nazareth, Sister Celine Osbourn of Chattanooga, Tenn., Rita Nicholas of Florida, Agnes Spaulding of Florida, Rose Thompson of Louisville and Ann Carlsen of New York; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. The body was bequeathed to University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia Church, 5313 Madison Pike, Independence, Ky. 41051. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Helen Margaret Ruddick, 91, of Newport, died Friday at The Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a retired salesperson with Pogue's department store, Cincinnati, an election poll worker for the city of Newport and a member of First Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, George Ruddick, died in 1960.

Survivors include sons, George Ruddick Jr. of Cherry Hill, N.J., William Ruddick of Highland Heights and Dr. Thomas Ruddick of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Jackie Hamm of Walton, Barbara Traylor of Independence and Sue Ray of Highland Heights; sister, Dorothy Katz of Levittown, N.J.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Norman "Pete" Shade Sr., 71, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home. He was a foreman for Keco Industry. A daughter, Janet Shade, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, James Shade of Covington and Norman Shade Jr. of Indianapolis; daughters, Pat Browning of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Dianna Lutz of Wooster, Ohio; mother, Helen McCollum of Kent, Ohio; brother, Eugene Shade of Lake Milton, Ohio; sister, Louise Meluch of Kent; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Paris Cemetery, Paris Township, Ohio.

Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Susanna "Susie" Stethen Wiley, 85, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Green Valley Health Care Center, Carrollton. She was retired from Teledyne Packaging Co., Carrollton. Her first husband, Raymond Stethen, and her second husband, Clarence Wiley, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sons, Harold Thomas Stethen of Carrollton and Douglas Stethen of Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
