Russell Reed, enjoyed life's simple pleasures

Russell Allen Reed was the son of a West Virginia coal miner who learned to appre ciate simple pleasures in life.

Among them were coaching his son's Pee Wee football and Knothole baseball teams, picking up his grandchildren and watching them smile. And listening to the buzz of a NASCAR race.

"Dad never met a stranger; everyone loved him, " said Mr. Reed's son, Jeff A. Reed of Florence.

"He and his brothers grew up in the coal mines of West Virginia and found a new life and really made it out here."

Russell Reed, 56, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

He was a shipper with H.K. Systems and was a former coach with the Boone County Pee Wee Football and Boone County Knothole Baseball teams.

Jeff Reed said his father coached him more than 20 years ago and approached his volunteer positions with enthusiasm.

Mr. Reed believed in helping his community and enjoyed spending time with children, his son said.

Mr. Reed was a good family man who also made time for his friends, his son said.

"Everyone who met Dad fell in love with him, " Mr. Reed said.

Besides his son, Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Cindy Hinkle Reed; a son, Jeff A. Reed of Florence; a sister, Sue Fore of Hometown, W.Va.; brothers, William Reed of Eleanor, W.Va., and Jesse Lee Reed of Courtland, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.

Memorials are suggested to National Brain Tumor Association, 785 Market St., Suite 1600, San Francisco, Calif. 94103.

Georgia Parrish, 110, faithful voter

A Franklin County woman who had dutifully voted since women's suffrage died Monday at 110.

Georgia Parrish was not an especially political person, but she took her voting rights seriously, a daughter, Mary Edna Bondurant, said Wednesday.

"She tried to vote in every election, " said Ms. Bondurant. No absentee ballots, either. "She liked to go in person."

Women gained the right to vote in 1920, and Ms. Bondurant said she believed her mother cast her first ballot that year in the election that made Warren G. Harding president.

Mrs. Parrish, who lived in the Peaks Mill community north of Frankfort, cast her last ballot two months ago.

Her funeral was scheduled for today.

Survivors included another daughter, Opal Gibson of Frankfort; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Her husband, Herman Shipp Parrish, a farmer, died in 1944.

Charles F. Courtney, 75, of Burlington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Willene Hamlet Courtney; daughters, Ann Campbell of Burlington and Patsy Jean Gallat of Warren, Mich.; sons, Herbert Finley Courtney and Charles W. Courtney, both of Florence, David Leroy Courtney of Independence and Robert Lynn Courtney of Fort Mitchell; sisters, Naomi Justice of Winchester, Emogine Marcum of Louisa and Ruth Compton of Allen Park, Mich.; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Jacob Donskey, 3, of Walton, died Tuesday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.

Ryan Drake, 21, of Independence, died Tuesday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.

He was a student at Northern Kentucky University and a member of St. Cecilia Church, Independence.

Survivors include his parents, David and Kathy Drake of Independence; a sister, Amanda Drake, at home; and grandmother, Juanita Drake of Visalia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Kentucky Organ Donor Association, 2201 Regency Road, Suite 601, Lexington, Ky. 40503.

Evelyn E. Hessinger, 79, of Glendale, Calif., and formerly of Newport, died Tuesday at Glendale Memorial Hospital. She was a retired executive secretary. Her husband, Howard E. Hessinger, died in 1978.

Private services will be at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Allene Berkshire Holbrook, 87, of Burlington, died Tuesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a seamstress with Squires and Burkhart's Clothing stores in Cincinnati, and a member of Belleview Church of Christ. Her husband, Raymond Holbrook, died in 1971.

Survivors include a son, Raymond C. Holbrook of Burlington; a daughter, Sherry Holbrook of Burlington; sisters, Margie Martin of Florence and Louella Voshell of Milford, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Belleview Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Belleview Church of Christ, 6247 Main St., Burlington, Ky. 41005.

Robert H. Huey, 93, of Gratz, died Tuesday at Green Valley Health Care Center, Carrollton. He was a farmer and a member of Drennon Springs Christian Church, Henry County. His wife, Stella Mae Raisor Huey, and a son, William Huey, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, Robert Huey Jr. of Hanover, Ind., and John M. Huey of Huntington, Tenn.; a sister, Rena Pearl Sargent of New Albany, Ind.; half-sisters, Mabel Vest of Bedford and Hattie; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Red Cross, 810 E. Chestnut St., Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Russell Eugene Kendall, 68, of Maysville, died at 11:55 p.m. Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. He was a mechanic with Dravo Lime, Maysville, and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Kendall; daughters, Lugene Lois Bradford, Carol Ann Moore, Pamela Jane Folmar and Paula Sue Kendall; sons, Warren Andrew Kendall, George Edgar Kendall and Charles Reynolds Kendall; a foster daughter, Connie Myers; a sister, Phyllis Smalley; brothers, James R. Kendall and Charles A. Kendall; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Olivet Church Cemetery, Maysville.

Willanna Kindoll, 75, of Carrollton, died Wednesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a retired paint room worker with Kawneer Corp.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Kindoll; daughters, Gayla Tomlinson, Barbara Shepherd and Vicki Hughes, all of Carrollton and Sandy Harmon of Campbellsburg; sons, Bradley Kindoll, Gary "Tick" Kindoll, Randy Kindoll, Larry Kindoll and Ricky Kindoll, all of Carrollton; a sister, Betty L. Beetem of Carrollton; 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Willie Knuckles, 57, of Falmouth, died Wdenesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Nora Bell Lankford, 80, of Latonia, died at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Carl Lankford, died in 1979.

Survivors include sons, Ron Lankford of Covington, Roy Helton and Harold Helton, both of New Brownfel, Texas; daughters, Pat Wright of Florence, Ann Shrouse of Sparta, Pam Lankford of Newport and Shirley Howard of Harlan; a sister, Gladys Curtis of Lexington; 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services were Wednesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery, Loyall.

Charles Miller, 77, of Gallatin County, died at 7:05 a.m. Wednesday at at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.

Milton A. Moore Sr., 64, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at his home. He was a farmer and a member of Seventh Street Christian Church, Paris. A son, Milton Moore Jr., and a daughter, Lillian Moore, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Demetrius Moore and Veroqua Moore, both of Lexington; brothers, James Spain of North Carolina and Teddy Taylor of Berea; sisters, Geneva Lewis, Patricia Walker, Rose Newby, Dorothy Boyes and Cynara Boyers, all of Cynthiana; and seven grandsons.

Memorials services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday.

Dorothy M. Nienaber, 85, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Pierce C. Nienaber, died in 1985.

Survivors include sons, John Nienaber of Ludlow, Joseph Nienaber of Fort Wright, Pierce Nienaber and William Nienaber, both of Cincinnati; a brother, Bud Malone of Bromley; a sister, Virginia Durstock of Fort Mitchell; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Fort Wright Fire Department, 409 Kyles Lane, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Ramona M. Stottman, 72, of Covington, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth.< p>

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Reeves of Villa Hills; sons, Michael B. Stottman of Fort Mitchell, Mark Stottman of Hebron and Greg Stottman of Burlington; a brother, Robert Sweitzer of Nashville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Robert G. Sullivan, 79, of Covington, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired clerk with the U.S. Postal Service, an usher and tour guide with the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Elizabeth Sullivan, died in 1994.

Survivors include sons, David Sullivan of Florence and Danny Sullivan of Withamsville, Ohio; daughters, Colleen Sullivan of Florence, Tracy Sullivan and Michelle Motz, both of Independence, Suzanne Sullivan of Latonia, Shannon Peters of Cincinnati and Beth Jensen of Southgate; a brother, Jerry Sullivan of Irvine; a sister, Elizabeth Vastine of Fort Wright; and 17 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. Visitation will be 5-8 tonight at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, 12th Street and Madison Avenue, Covington, Ky. 41011.
