Catherine Spivey, helped others in her community
Catherine Spivey was an outgoing woman who believed in contributing to her community.
She was active at her children's schools. She helped raise money for the Silver Grove Fire Department. And she was happy to help neighbors with requests they made.
"She was very loving and encouraging. She was always there for you, " said a daughter, Lisa Placke of Independence.
Mrs. Spivey, 73, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and former employee of the Wadsworth Watch Co. in Dayton.
She was a member of the Salvation Army Adult Day Care Center in Newport, the Silver Grove Parent-Teacher Association and the Silver Grove Athletic Boosters.
She was a former member of Silver Grove Christian Church and Silver Grove Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Her husband, William B. Spivey, died in 1987.
Mrs. Spivey was a Newport native who spent much of her life in Silver Grove.
And it is residents from Silver Grove who have helped her family with funeral preparations, Mrs. Placke said.
Mrs. Spivey helped take care of school children on field trips, according to her daughter.
She also helped raise money for children to enjoy Easter and Christmas, her daughter said.
Mrs. Spivey doted on her grandchildren and enjoyed knitting, her daughter said. "A lot of people are going to miss her, " Mrs. Placke said.
Mrs. Spivey also is survived by another daughter, Cheryle Warman of Beaver Creek, Ohio; son, James W. Spivey of Silver Grove; brother, Charles Moniack of Winter Park, Fla.; sister, Pearl Egbring of Dayton; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Florence "Betty" E. Bresser, 75, of Ludlow, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a former employee of the Kentucky Driver's License Bureau. Her daughter, Diane Bresser, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, John Bresser; sons, Ron Bresser of Edgewood and John H. Bresser Jr. of Florence; sister, Bernadine Clifford of Clayton, Ga.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Margaret M. Brown, 77, of Florence, died at 7:10 p.m. Thursday at Woodspoint Health Care Center, Florence. She was a retired clerk for the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, Silver Grove. Her husband, Wilbert Brown, preceded her in death.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, California. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, California.
Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Helen Marie Lorenz Crusham, 71, of Woodlawn, died at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, James Crusham; daughters, Diane Matt of Highland Heights, Cindy Duesing of Bellevue and Connie Krebs of Fort Thomas; a son, Michael Crusham of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Martha Jewell Davies, 82, of Highland Heights, died at 11:55 p.m. Thursday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William H. Davies II, and son, William H. Davies III, both died in 1998.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nancy Ziegler of Florence; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Robert Thomas Dorgan, 77, of Hartford, formerly of Newport, died at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday at Ohio County Medical Center, Hartford. He was a bottling machine mechanic for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Cincinnati, a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Beaver Dam, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Hill Dorgan; sons, Stephen Dorgan of Cincinnati, David Dorgan of California and Rob Dorgan of Newport; brothers, Johnnie Dorgan of Independence, Elmer Dorgan of Florence and Tommy Dorgan of Fort Thomas; a sister, Audrey Cliff of Silver Grove; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home, Hartford. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Beaver Dam.
Emma Irene Hogle, 89, of Newport, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired employee of Disabled American Veterans, Cold Spring. Her husband, James William Hogle, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Lou Steffen of Alexandria, Peggy Spaulding of Covington and Phyllis Ann Maybury of Newport; brothers, John Sprague of Loveland and Leroy Sprague of Burlington; sisters, Jeanette Hogle of Erlanger, Linda Johns of Hamilton and Margie Whitt of Cincinnati; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Opal Goodrich Judy, 76, of Owenton, died Friday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton. Her husband, Owen Judy Jr., died in 1977.
Survivors include a sister, Edna Lathrem of Owenton.

Carol Kamson, 67, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was an inventory controller for Grassmuck-Lange Jewelers, Cincinnati, and a member of the Humane Society, Cincinnati, and Ohio Division Treasurer and Cincinnati Chapter Secretary of the Year for the International Association of Administrative Personnel.
Survivors include a sister, Mary McCarthy of Fort Thomas.

Jane Hammans Luman, 60, of Mount Olivet, died Friday at her home. She was a former jockey and a member of McKendrie Methodist Church, Germantown.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil Edford Luman; a son, Marlin Luman of Maysville; a brother, Robert Cooper of Germantown; sisters, Geneva Gallagher of Brooksville and Ruth Harris of Maysville; fou r grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from noon until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germant own.
Anne Gordon Wallingford McIntyre, 74, of Maysville, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a retired beautician and former owner of Court Street Beauty Shop, Maysville.
Survivors include her husband, John Kenneth McIntyre; a son, Kent McIntyre of Bright, Ind.; a daughter, Tawna Smith of Maysville; two grandsons and three stepgrandsons.

Arthur Pressler, 48, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a self-employed painter and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Pressler; daughters, Angela Pressler of Texas, Amanda Herald of Covington, Amy Wagner of Alexandria, and Amber Pressler and Alissia Pressler, both of Kentucky; sons, Randy Smithson of Alexandria, and Arthur Pressler and Anthony Pressler, both of Kentucky; stepchildren, Cheynee Herrington and Artie Tubb, both at home; sisters, Carol Casebolt, Margie Sharp and Mary Cook, all of Newport, and Virginia Tipton of Alexandria; and brothers, Robert Pressler, Roy Pressler and Ronald Pressler, all of Newport.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services today. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Jill Ann Smith, 62, of Covington, died at 10:10 a.m. Thursday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Smith; sons, Gary Smith and Robert Smith, both of Covington and Ricky Smith of Florence; daughters, Debbie Boothe of Dry Ridge, Jennie Pickett of Walton and Mar tha Smith of Covington; and five grandchildren.

James "Jim" Tapp, 64, of Edgewood, died at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at his home. He was a retired security man for the St. Elizabeth Medical Centers.
Survivors include his wife, Alice E. Hamilton Tapp; sons, Wayde R. Tapp of Independence and Jason Bodie of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Kathleen R. McKinley of Winchester, Va., and Laura R. Schattuck of Williamstown; stepsons, Wayne Williamson of New York City, Gary Williamson of Dayton, Ohio, and Mike Emerson of Fairfield, Ohio; a brother, Richard Tapp of Florence; four grandchildren; seven step grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Josephine "Jo" Yates, 51, of Cynthiana, died at 9:18 a.m. Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. She was a cook at Edgemont Manor Nursing Home, Cynthiana.
Survivors include her husband, Roger Yates; sisters, Carrie Catron of Cynthiana and Linda Fay Perrigan of Mansfield, Ohio; and brothers, Tommy Taylor of Clintwood, Va., and Donald Taylor and Arnold Taylor, both of Blackfoot, Idaho.
Services will be at noon Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Burial will be in Pythian Gr ove Cemetery.
