Raymond Faragher, noted philanthropist
Raymond Faragher summed up one of his life's guiding principles in a 1992 Kentucky Post story. "We were meant to share, " said Mr. Faragher. "I don't care if it's money or art or whatever you have. The point is to share."
When the 76-year-old Kenton Hills philanthropist died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington, it was evident he was very much a man of his word.
The retired business owner made a habit of giving away much of what fortune gave him. In 1988, Mr. Faragher sold his Cincinnati bathroom accessories company, Saturday Knight Ltd., in order to devote more time and money to charity.
In 1990, he contributed $200, 000 to build a girls school in a remote, impoverished village in southern India.
"My parents had traveled to India, " said daughter, Teri Faragher. "They were so upset about the status of women in that country, I think they could see that without education women didn't have much of a chance."
Shortly after Mr. Faragher's contribution to build that school, he gave $32, 000 to Northern Kentucky Habitat for Humanity. Then he donated a similar amount to the non-profit Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky.
And upon Mr. Faragher's death, his sprawling and detailed world-class model train "city" is being donated to the Behringer Crawford Museum in Devou Park. He was a member of the Garden Railway Train Club and World Class Trains.
Mr. Faragher had played for Ludlow High School's 1940 football team. The school's auditorium is named in his honor.
He served in the submarine service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Kleier Faragher; daughters, Annie Bennett of Fort Thomas and Teri Faragher of Woodford County, Ky.; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. Faragher donated his body to the University of Cincinnati Department of Anatomy.
