Nurse Alfreda Scaggs, helped deliver babies
Alfreda Scaggs helped deliver all seven of her grandchildren - as well as countless other babies in Northern Kentucky.
Mrs. Scaggs was a labor and delivery nurse at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, and prior o that an obstetrics nurse at Speers Hospital in Dayton and at Booth Hospital in Covington.
"She loved it, " said her son-in-law, Joe Kohsin of Warsaw. "She talked a lot about it. She had some really good things to tell and some really sad stories about babies who didn't make it."
Mrs, Scaggs, 88, of Erlanger, formerly of Bellevue, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She spent the last 22 years of her career working in the obstetrics and gynecology practice of Drs. Giglia, O'Connor and Gunn in Fort Thomas.
"She was a happy, caring kind of person, " said Mr. Kohsin. "She liked people, was easy to get along with.
"And she loved kids. Whenever she saw kids, she'd have to stop and play with them."
She also loved baby-sitting her grandchildren, Mr. Kohsin said, and she enjoyed bowling until she was in her 60s. She also liked church bingos and was a member of Beaver Lick Christian Church, Walton.
Survivors include her daughter, Doretha Kohsin of Warsaw; son, James Clifford Scaggs of Burlington; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Hazel Brashear, 87, of Gallatin County, died at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker and a member of 10 Mile Baptist Church, Gallatin County.
Her husband, Robert Brashear, died in 1993.
Survivors include her sons, David Brashear of Dry Ridge and Robert V. Brashear of Warsaw; daughters, Carol Ruth Thomas of Warsaw and Eva Barnett of Dry Ridge; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Napoleon Oddfellows Cemetery, Gallatin County.
Ralph Everett Chafer Sr., 94, of Florence, died Sunday at his home. He was a retail hardware clerk and a member of Lions Club. His wife, Wilma Chafer, died in 1998.
Survivors include his sons, David Chafer of Florence, Joseph Chafer of Lombard, Ill., Keith Chafer of Park Falls, Wis., Paul Chafer of Lone Rock, Wis., Richard Chafer of El Paso, Texas, Theodore Chafer of Gaylord, Mich., and Hadley Chafer and Ralph Chafer Jr., both of Fifield, Wis.; daughters, Doris Smith of Gaylord, Mich., and Betty Williams of Schofield, Wis.; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Novitzke Funeral Home, Park Falls, Wis.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Fifield, Wis.
Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling local arrangements.
Lloyd W. Hargis, 88, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Richard Allen Hause, 62, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, and formerly of Bracken County, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired computer programmer, a member of Brooksville Christian Church and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his brothers, William Robert Hause and David "Pete" Hause, both of Brooksville; and his sisters, Dolores Hedges of Silver Grove, Betty Sue Jackson of Cold Spring.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery.
Dieter Hopperjans, 54, of Boone County, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Linemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Elizabeth King, 81, of Falmouth, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a farmer and a member of Oakland Christian Church, Pendleton County.
Her husband George King, died in 1989.
Survivors include her son, Ronald Holton King of Brooksville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakland Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Woodhead Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Neave Cemetery, Bracken County.

James Rodney Robinson, 34, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a machine operator at LaFarge Corp., Silver Grove.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Robinson of Independence; son, Kyle Robinson at home; stepson, Jason Stump at home; parents, Dewey Robinson and Hazel Robinson, both of Wilder; sister, Brenda Morgan of Walton; and brother Mark Robinson of Florence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
H. Adrian Sluss, 76, of Augusta, died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Hospital, Maysville.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Minerva United Methodist Church, Augusta. His wife, Mary E. Sluss, died in 2000.
Survivors include his son, Adrian Lee Sluss of Maysville; daughter, Loretta Davis of Harvey, Ill.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Maysville.
