Gertrude Stoeckle, 101, credited long life to rosary, cream sherry
Gertrude Stoeckle, who lived to be 101 years old, had a ready answer when asked h ow she managed to live so long.
"She drank a small shot of cream sherry every night before she went to bed. She said it helped her rest, " said her grandson, Robert Stoeckle of Park Hills.
Gertrude Theresa Stoeckle of Erlanger died Tuesday at the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
Mrs. Stoeckle, who grew up in Cincinnati, was a homemaker.
From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, she also was a seasonal employee of the Internal Revenue Service in Covington, where she processed tax returns.
Robert Stoeckle said his grandmother and his grandfather, William F. Stoeckle, who died in 1975, were people of strong faith.
Mrs. Stoeckle was a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, and the oldest living member of a Catholic women's charitable organization called the Daughters of Isabelle St. James Circle in Cincinnati.
"She and grandpa were both very spiritual, " said Robert Stoeckle. "My grandfather's brother was a priest.
"She had a very deep love for the Blessed Mother and the Sacred Heart. She prayed her rosary daily - even up until Jan. 31, when she had her first in a series of heart attacks.
"She influenced a lot of her grandkids."
Mrs. Stoeckle had a flower garden and cut the grass in her yard until she was 92.
"She was strong-willed. Very determined, " said her grandson.
"You always knew where you stood with her."
Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Lucille Fanthorp of Fort Thomas; sons, Albin E. Stoeckle of Owenton and Louis Stoeckle of Wilder; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.
Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Hattie Brandt, 93, of Covington, died Wednesday at West Chester Care Center, West Chester, Ohio.
She was a retired press feeder for Gibson Art Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include a nephew, Ronald Kelm of Walled Lake, Mich.; and friends, Junior and Clyda Estes of West Chester, who took care of Ms. Brandt.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Stanley G. Conrad, 80, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at his home.
Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Marian E. Rouse, 89, of Latonia, died at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Her husband, James M. Rouse, died in 1989.
A son, Eugene Ross, died in 1992.
Survivors include a son, Michael J. Rouse of Taylor Mill; daughters, Ruth Anne Ridenour of Latonia and Phyllis Schulz of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Church.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Prayers will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
