Rev. John J. McGuire, 40-year Covington priest

Rev. John J. McGuire believed in helping people at home and in other countries.

Rev. McGuire, a priest with the Diocese of Covington for 40 years, was a former pastor of Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger. He also established two parishes in Colombia.

Jerry Enderle, of Burlington, worked with Rev. McGuire on the finance council at Mary Queen of Heaven Church and traveled with the priest to Colombia.

"He enjoyed being a priest and serving the people. I saw that when I worked with him at Mary Queen of Heaven and when I traveled with him to Cali, " Enderle said. "The people of Cali looked at him as a father."

Rev. McGuire, 67, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

A native of Ashland, Father McGuire established two parishes in Colombia a number of years ago.

He built Our Lady of Hope parish in Cali and then built another church, Jese of Nazareth, in the neighborhood of Diamante.

Later, Rev. McGuire established a non-profit organization, Mission Share, to contin ue to support church services in Colombia. Mission Share has since expanded its projects to include Mexico, Africa and Russia.

Rev. McGuire retired as pastor of Mary Queen of Heaven Church in 1998.

He was a member of Ancient Order of Hibernians and was the first chaplain of the Northern Kentucky Fenians Chapter. The organization holds a fund-raising golf tournament each year in Father McGuire's name.

John Meece, a nephew who lives in Erlanger, said his uncle was very interested in community and family.

"He really taught people to believe in community and believe beyond themselves to poorer nations. He had numerous ongoing projects. It was just incredible."

Survivors include brothers, Carl Philip McGuire and Edwin Patrick McGuire, both of Ashland, and David Stephen McGuire of Ironton, Ohio; and a sister, Mary Joan Meece of Fort Wright.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the cathedral, and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Holy Family Church, Ashland. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ashland. Memorials are suggested to Mission Share Inc., P. O. Box 176356, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Albert Barlow, 79, of Union, died at 12:15 a.m. today at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Michael Bowman, 46, of Hebron, died Monday at his home. He was a disabled machinist.

Survivors include daughters, Melissa Crider of Hebron and Michele Bowman of Fort Myers, Fla.; brothers, Jim Bowman of Verona, Greg Bowman and Alvin Bowman, both of Covington; sisters, Pam Westermeyer of Park Hills, Cathy Varnado and Theresa Barnes, both of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Elizabeth "Betty" Menzies Bradshaw, 82, of Park Hills, died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church. She was a former member and deaconess with Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati. She was a member of Fort Mitchell Country Club, a board member of the Covington Ladies Home, a past treasurer with Covington Salvation Army Corp. and a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood and Clovernook School for the Blind. Her husband, G. A. Bradshaw, died in 1984.

Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Bradshaw Garrett of Atlanta and Ann Bradshaw Drew of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, John Whitley Menzies of Florence; and four granddaughters.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 2690 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017; or National Audubon Society, 1305 Germany Road, Frankfort, Ky. 40601. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Helen Caldwell Brock, 92, of Frankfort, died Tuesday at Bradford Square Nursing Home, Frankfort. She was a homemaker and a farmer. Her husband, Hollie Brock, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Jimmy Brock of Peewee Valley and Harold Brock of Frankfort; daughters, Joyce Hammond of Monterey and Muriel Rose of Scranton, Pa.; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Jonesville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601-2744.

Margaret Elizabeth Brockman, 68, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a bookkeeper with Liberty Mutual. Her husband, Raymond Brockman, died in 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Johns of Covington; a son, Daniel Brockman of Burlington; a sister, Mary Bennett of Tucson, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P. O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, Tenn. 38148.

Terry Alan Casey, 39, formerly of Covington, died Dec. 22 as a result of injuries from an auto accident in Blountville, Tenn.

Mr. Casey was a certified respiratory therapist for Select Specialty Hospital of Bristol, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife, Pam Bradley Casey of Blountville, who is expecting the couple's first child in May; a daughter, Rachel Casey of Kingsport, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Jessica Cherry; parents, Alan and LaVerne Cullum Casey of Kingsport; sisters, Connie Soard of Kingsport and Casey Roark of Independence; a brother, Len Casey, of Bristol; and a stepgrandson.

Services were Dec. 27. Burial was at East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport. East Lawn Funeral Home, Kingsport, handled arrangements. Memorials are suggested to a fund for Mr. Casey's children, c/o any Firstar bank location.

Nellie Chinn, 93, of Germantown, died Tuesday at her home. She was a restaurant owner and a member of Germantown Christian Church. Her husband, Allen Fay Chinn, died in 1955. A son, Harold Chinn, and a daughter, Marjorie Chinn, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Ramona Ernest of Sardinia, Ohio, and Mary Ann Mains of Germantown; a brother, Welburn Monahon of Germantown; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to Germantown Christian Church, Germantown, Ky. 41044.

Gerald Dance, 69, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Walton and Independence, died Dec. 13 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include daughters, Angela Brehm of Taylor Mill, Lisa Hensley of Morning View and Trinia Fisk Cooper of Paducah; a son, Gerald Wright of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Dec. 18 at Hill Crest Cemetery, Crittenden. Urbanski Funeral Home, Toledo, handled arrangements.

Talbert "Tack" Deaton Sr., 90, of Wolfcoal, died Sunday at Appalachian Regional Medical Center, Hazard. He was a retired coal miner, a carpenter and an employee of the Kentucky State Highway Department. His wife, Malinda Turner Deaton, died in 1997. A daughter, Magdalene Turner, died in 1998.

Survivors include daughters, Rose Lee Lingley and Polly Dunn, both of Wolfcoal; sons, James Robert "Bob" Deaton of Alexandria, Johnny Deaton of Butler and Talbert Deaton Jr. of Wolfcoal; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon today at Deaton Funeral Home, Jackson. Burial will be in Floyd Herald Cemetery, Talbert. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Mary Katherine Dehan, 89, of Latonia, died at 3:04 p.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Columbkille Church, Wilmington, Ohio. She was a member of the church's Sacred Heart Sodality. Her husband, James M. Dehan, died in 1989. Sons, James E. Dehan and Thomas J. Dehan, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Robert C. Dehan of Madeira, Ohio, Michael Dehan of Bedford and Daniel P. Dehan of Wilmington; a daughter, Anne Santangelo of Mount Lookout, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Holy Name Church, 2448 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

John L. Feagan, 91, of Burlington, died Monday at his home. He was a retired farmer, a former member of the Boone County School Board, and a former deacon with Richwood Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the board of Kentucky Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Co. His first wife, Catherine Cleek Feagan, died in 1984. Sons, Jack Feagan and Jim Feagan, died in 1999 and 1976, respectively.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Ryle Feagan; daughters, Jill Stephenson of Piedmont, S.C., Judy O'Mara of Simpsonville, S.C., Joy Mulligan of Georgetown, Janelle Thompson of Chillicothe, Ohio, Emily June Owen of Burlington and Janice Himmelsbach of Watkinsville, Ga.; sons, Jerry Feagan of Dry Ridge and J. R. Feagan of Verona; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Richwood Presbyterian Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Florence Baptist Church Building Fund, 283 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042.

James William Ginn Jr., 71, of Maysville, died at 5:03 a.m. Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was the owner of East End Stag Bar, Maysville, and an employee of U.S. Shoe Corp., Maysville. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Ginn; sons, Mark Allen Ginn of Rectorville and William Myers Ginn of Maysville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday.

Gerald Holloway, 68, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Martha Mae Callis Krohn, 78, of Carrollton, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a cook with Churchill Manor Restaurant. Her husband, Bill Krohn, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Richard Callis, David Callis, Jerry Callis and Mike Callis, all of Clarksville, Ind., Truman Callis of Bloomington, Ind., and Ricky Callis of Carrollton; daughters, Donna Callis Little and Connie Callis Walker, both of Indianapolis; sisters, Orena Tingle and Jean Kelley, both of Bedford, and Gail Mahoney of Carrollton; brothers, Graham Perkinson of Olympia, Wash., and Billy Joe Perkinson of Bedford; half-sisters, Gloria Shaw of Louisville and Dorothy Bean of Bedford; a half-brother, Lawrence Andrews of Orlando, Fla.; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Bedford.

Mary E. Lucas, 80, of Fort Thomas, died at 11:35 p.m. Monday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a former hair stylist with Mabley and Carew Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Covington.

Survivors include a brother, Charles A. Lucas of Middletown, Ohio; and a niece.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Robert R. Mardis, 72, of Newport, died at 5 a.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Mardis; a daughter, Scarlet Mardis of Washington, D.C.; a son, Robert Mardis of Dry Ridge; his mother, Della Jones of Covington; sisters, Pauline Jenkins of Taylor Mill and Joan Saylor of Latonia; a brother, John Mardis of Covington; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Elizabeth Wells Mason, 85, of Maysville, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Maysville Extended Care Center. She was a homemaker, a member of Washington Presbyterian Church and a 4-H leader. Her husband, Oliver "Shine" Mason, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Louis Mason of Maysville; a daughter, Celia Marple of Maysville; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, is handling arrangements.

Marvin Lee Miller, 38, of Crittenden, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was disabled and was a member of Crittenden Baptist Church. A son, Kenneth Raymond "Kenny Ray" Miller, died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Joshua Lee Marvin Miller of Florence; a stepson, Avery Michal Johnson of Florence; daughters, Desirae Lee Mullins of Richwood, Amanda Rochelle Miller Rayburn of Fort Wright, Felecia Marie Miller and Chyane Nicole Miller, both of Dry Ridge, and Natasha Renee Miller and Sara Katherine Miller, both of Florence; his parents, Kenneth Lee Miller and Joyce Simpson Miller, both of Crittenden; brothers, Robert Paul Miller of Williamstown, James "Bryan" Miller of Dry Ridge, Kenneth "Mark" Miller and Michael Glenn Miller, both of Crittenden; and a sister, Kimberly Janell Miller of Crittenden.

Kerney O. Pelfrey Jr., 79, of Campbellsburg, formerly of Burlington, died Monday at his home. He was a retired manager, a member of Belleview Church of Christ and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Oliver Pelfrey; daughters, Karen Fox of Union, Judy Newton of Minco, Okla., Phyllis Pelfrey of Campbellsburg, Jean Daniels of Ludlow and Debbie Perkins of Tulsa, Okla.; a son, Kerney Robert Pelfrey of Zephyrhills, Fla.; sisters, Jean Kelley of Bedford and Juanita Hopkins of Burlington; brothers, Roy Pelfrey of Lexington, Robert C. Pelfrey of Fort Myers, Fla., Porter Pelfrey of Bedford and Gerald Pelfrey Sr. of Union; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

James Allen Poe, 68, of Mount Olivet, died Sunday at his home. He was a farmer, a past president of the Kingsburg, Calif., Gun Club, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Brumley Poe; sons, Jeffrey Poe and Steve Poe, both of Selam, Calif.; a daughter, Candice Jones of Kingsburg; stepsons, Marc Cooper and Kevin Cooper, both of Germantown, and Chris Cooper of Brooksville; stepdaughters, Colette Bivens of Cynthiana and Tara Jefferson of Germantown; his mother, Cecile Jett Poe of Mount Olivet; eight grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery.

Lydia Louise Robinson, 90, of Cumberland County, died Monday at Appalachian Regional Health Care Center, Lake Cumberland. She was a manager of a Woolworth's store. Her husband, Luke Robinson, a son James "Sonny" Robinson, and a daughter Naomi Whittenburg all preceded her in death.

Survivors include grandchildren, Connie Smith and Donald Bryant, both of Somerset, and Deborah Pellilo of Burlington; two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Floral Hills cemetery Chapel, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
