Albert 'Tuffy' Barlow, Union's city historian
When students at Ryle High School wanted to compile a history of the city of Unio n, they turned to Albert "Tuffy" Barlow for guidance.
When interested residents sought to recreate a map of Union from the mid-1900s, they turned to Barlow, too. He knew as much about the history of the Boone County town as anybody.
"He was like a walking history book of this community, " said Mr. Barlow's daughter, Sharon Bellan of Union.
"Ryle sent their students down here to interview him about its history, and he drew a map of Union as he remembered it as a child, too, and all these people wanted copies of it. He had an excellent memory, and he knew everybody that lived around here."
Albert Surface "Tuffy" Barlow, 79, of Union, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired warehouse manager with Chevron Oil where he had worked 42 years.
Mr. Barlow also contributed countless hours of his time as community historian and a founding member of the Union Volunteer Fire Department.
"1969 is when they formed it, " said Ms. Bellan. "Florence was the only closest fire department, and it was so far away that houses were burning down before anybody could get out here."
