Roy Wartmann, loved sports
Longtime Latonia resident Roy A. Wartmann, a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was 87.
Mr. Wartmann was a retired shop foreman with Cincinnati Milacron and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. He also was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was best known as one of three Wartmann brothers named to the local sports hall. Mr. Wartmann was inducted for his success as a wrestler.
His parents were known to take their five children to Redsland Field, where the Cincinnati Reds played at the time, and encouraged the children to participate in sports. Mr. Wartmann and two of his brothers wrestled with the Fenwick Club in Cincinnati and later played golf in the area. He was a member of the Twin Oaks Golf Club in Latonia.
However, he always kept sports in the prop er perspective. "He was devoted to his family, " said a niece, Emma Bornhorst. "He didn't have any children of his own, but he was devoted to his wife and his neighbors. If any of the neighbors needed anything, they could always count on him."
Mr. Wartmann leaves two brothers, Howard Wartmann of Villa Hills and Edward Wartmann of Dearborn, Mich.; nieces and nephews.
His wife, Muriel J. Wartmann, died in 1993. Another brother, William Wartmann, died in 1995. His sister, Thelma B. Wolking, died in 1998.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Donald Hacker, 68, of Cincinnati, died Dec. 28 at his residence.
He was a painter for Certified Restorations in Cincinnati and an army veteran.
Survivors include a son, Steve Hacker of Wilder; a daughter, Sheila Hacker of Fort Thomas; a sister, Ceila Hoskins of Manchester; a brother, Johnny Hacker of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Home in Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Monday until time of service. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Withamsville, Ohio.
Herbert Hoover, 82, of Claysville, formerly of Robertson County, died Wednesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
He was a retired employee of the Ladish Co., a retired farmer and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hoover; daughters, Joan Hoover Ingram and Helen Hoover Stewart, both of Brooksville, Brenda Hoover Henson of Walton and Delvon Hoover Jones of Madison, Ala.; sisters, Nora Henson and Ethel Hoover, both of Robertson County, and Juanita Lawson and Yvonne Ellis, both of Harrison County; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Kentontown Cemetery.

Robert Everett McLaughlin, 81, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Monday at his home.
He was a retired professor with the University of Tennessee, a geologist and past president of the Knoxville Scottish Society and Clan MacLachlan of North America.
He was a member of Fellowship of the Society and Antiquities of Scotland and a veteran of the Marine Corps.
His wife, Jean King McLaughlin, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa McLaughlin of Knoxville; sons, Michael McLaughlin and Scott McLaughlin, both of Knoxville; sisters, June Clifford and Mary Lou Ingle; a brother, Glenn McLaughlin; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Highland West Chapel Funeral Home, Knoxville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling local arrangements.
Robert J. Rowe, 75, of Cold Spring, died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired manager with Cincinnati Bell, a member of Telephone Pioneers and International Brotherhood of Magicians, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Anita C. Rowe; a son, David Rowe of Alexandria; daughters, Debbie Foltz of Burlington and Sandy Ketterer of Alexandria; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Marcella M. Schafer, 91, of Villa Hills, died Thursday at Madonna Manor Nursing home in Villa Hills.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harold Schafer, died in 1955.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Haines of Cincinnati; a son, Dennis Schafer of Union; sisters, Sister Judith McGuire, S.D.N., of Louisville and Catherine McGuire of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Madonna Manor. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Jeannie Kaye Smithers, 51, of Augusta, died Thursday at her home.

Ann Wachter, 89, of Maysville, died at 1:15 a.m. Thursday at Maysville Extended Care Center.
She was a waitress with the Dream Bar in Maysville. A son, Robert Ray Reynolds, died in 1985.
Survivors include her husband, Calvin C. Wachter; a daughter, Norma Hoop of Manchester, Ohio; two stepsons, six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
