Mary Kathleen Jones, took care of sick
Mary Kathleen Jones spent her life taking care of others as a nurse and privately when her own relatives faced death.
"She just enjoyed taking care of people - anybody who was sick, " said her son, Todd Jones, a former Post reporter who now lives in Columbus, Ohio.
"She took care of several of her dying relatives. That was her role in life, to take care of people.
"I think when she was sick, it was difficult for her. . . . She was always used to being the one taking care of others."
Mrs. Jones, 56, of Wilder, died Thursday at her home.
Her work included 18 years as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
"I think she liked working with children and just helping families, " her son said. "She knew when she was helping a child, she was helping a whole family."
She left the hospital in 1983 and spent the next eight years at the Northern Kentucky Health Clinic in Newport.
After being diagnosed with cancer in March 1999, she fought hard against the disease, her son said.
"She was a very proud person and not in a vain way, " he said. "She did have a lot of pride about her family, and she faced her illness with a lot of pride and dignity. One thing we told her was we were proud of her for accepting it when she had to."
He described his mother as outgoing and gregarious.
"She liked to have fun, " he said. "She wasn't afraid to be the life of the party. She and my father have a group of friends - a few other couples. They have been friends forever. They taught my brothers and I to value a friendship."
The things that matter most in life - raising her children, maintaining her friendships and loving her family - she took very seriously, he said.
"The hardest thing for my mom was having three grandchildren and not being able to have the next 20 years or so with them, " her son said. "She really enjoyed that role as grandmother, and it was hard to give that up."
At home, Mrs. Jones had a flair for interior decorating.
