Edward Huck, former jailer
When Edward J. "Ed" Huck ran the Campbell County Jail in the 1980s, his family pitched in to help.
Vicki Huck worked at the jail - nicknamed "Huck's Hilton" - as a deputy matron during her dad's four years as jailer. Mr. Huck's wife, Renia, cooked for the 67 prisoners in the old county courthouse jail on Fourth Street.
Mr. Huck, 74, of Newport, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He retired as Campbell County jailer in 1983. After serving eight years as a deputy sheriff at the jail, Mr. Huck was elected to fill the unexpired term of Edward "Cal" Schabell in 1979. He was elected again in 1981 for a four-year term.
"Being right there together - we were like a threesome at election night at the polls at the old courthouse, " said Vicki Huck, of Newport.
"When he won - just to be able to share that was the highlight of my life."
Mr. Huck resigned two years into his term following unproven allegations he was too rough with inmates.
He was retained as a consultant by the Campbell County Fiscal Court through 1985. He also ran unsuccessfully for the Campbell County Commission in 1985.
Before his positions with Campbell County, Mr. Huck had worked 21 years as a Terminal Operations Manager for Roadway Express.
Daughter Debbie Stevenson of Bellevue remembers her father's compassion and generosity.
"My father was a very compassionate, giving man, " said Ms. Stevenson. "I've seen him sit in Frisch's and know somebody there who didn't really have money to buy food, and he would anonymously buy them a meal."
