Lorraine Epplen, 40 years as crossing guard
To Lorraine Epplen, the idea of retiring from her position as a school crossing gua rd while she was still able-bodied seemed ridiculous. However, her son, Gary Epplen, didn't know that when he suggested that his 70-something mother hang up her white gloves.
"She said, 'I have a purpose in life, "' he recalled. "She said, 'These kids need me, and I'm going to get these kids across safe.' "
And Ms. Epplen did that, almost up until her death Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
The Covington woman was 77.
Her son said she had worked until she was hospitalized in December. In all, Mrs. Epplen served 40 years as a crossing guard with the Covington Police Department.
Gary Epplen said his mother always worked at 12th and Greenup streets, taking kids to and from Holy Family Elementary. She was a neighborhood fixture, he said.
"Everybody knew her and said hello to her, " said her son.
