Albert Wermeling, 81, former Elsmere mayor
Former Elsmere Mayor Albert Wermeling was dedicated to the city he served for 30 years.
"He probably would have preferred to have died sitting in council chambers, " said Mr. Wermeling's brother, George Wermeling, the former mayor of Covington. "That was his second family. Other people hold office and come and go. But to him, it was just a continual thing."
Mr. Wermeling, 81, of Elsmere, died Wednesday night at his daughter's home in Villa Hills.
Mr. Wermeling first ran for Elsmere City Council in 1969, when Elsmere was a town in transition.
"Elsmere was at the point it would just stay a little rural town or turn into a nice, elegant suburban city, " George Wermeling said. "I'd call him the new father of Elsmere. He really helped turn it around."
On the last day George Wermeling saw his brother, he offered a proposition:
"I said, 'Get your strength back, maybe we'll go back to city hall and run again, ' " George Wermeling said.
"He said, 'Yes, that would be good. Let's do it.' "
Mr. Wermeling, the eldest of three politically active brothers, took office for the first time in 1970 as a councilman and became mayor for the first time in 1974. Over the next 26 years, he served two more terms as a councilman and five terms as mayor before resigning in January 2000 when he moved to Covington.
Mr. Wermeling was born in Covington and lived in Northern Kentucky all his life. He married
his wife, Coletta, just before shipping off to World War II to fight in the Pacific.
An Army infantryman, he fought in a grueling hand-to-hand battle at Zig Zag Path, where most of the men with him died. George Wermeling said it wasn't something his older brother talked about until the last two years of his life.
Mr. Wermeling was a salesman for Glier's Meats in Covington until 1987, when he retired. His wife died in 1988.
Albert Wermeling was a lively man who everyone loved, George Wermeling said. "He enjoyed his life. He was just a fun, happy, outgoing person."
