Mary Fromme, civic leader
Long before Newport adopted its new image of riverfront dining and office development, Mary E. Fromme and her family were promoting the town as a good place to raise a family.
Her son, Thomas Fromme, a Newport native, worked his way through the ranks and is now the city's police chief.
For many years, Mrs. Fromme and her late husband, Thomas H. Fromme, were leaders of the Newport Neighborhood Advisory Council, which has given guidance to the Newport City Commission on community problems for more than 25 years.
Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli said Mrs. Fromme was an outspoken woman who would let city com missioners know what she thought.
"Mary was very involved in the community, " Guidugli said.
