Ronald Phillips helped feed world
Ronald E. Phillips was known internationally for his work in agronomy, and his work helped change how farmers feed the world.
Dr. Phillips did extensive research on no-till farming and soil conservation to preserve soil from erosion. His methods, some of which are now in use, reduce plowing and control weeds in the following year's crop.
Dr. Phillips, 71, of Shelbyville, Ind., formerly of Williamstown, died Friday at his home.
He retired as a professor of agronomy with the University of Kentucky in 1992. He was a fellow and former director of both the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America.
He was a 1970 University of Kentucky Research Foundation Award winner and was the 1971 winner of the Thomas Poe Cooper Research Award. He was the American Society of Agronomy's Outstanding Educator in America in 1975 and also was a former editorial board member of the Soil Science Society of America Journal.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Shelbyville, and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington.
He was unassuming and affable, said his brother, Charles R. Phillips of Dry Ridge.
"He was a very nice person to be around, " Charles Phillips said. "He was agreeable and could carry on a conversation with just about anybody."
Ronald Phillips loved to fish and enjoyed playing pinochle.
"He was quite a fellow, and I was honored to be his brother, " Charles Phillips said.
Ronald Phillips' wife, Mary Susan Conrad Phillips, died in 1975.
In addition to his brother, survivors include a son, Gregory C. Phillips of Las Cruces, N.M.; daughters, Rhonda Schofner of Edinburgh, Ind., and Barbara McAnany of Wilmington, Del.; a brother, Clyde W. "Pete" Phillips of Glencoe; sisters, June D. Lea of Shelbyville and Betty A. Wegener of Dry Ridge; eight grandchildren and one great- grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
A memorial fund will be set up at the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture at a later date.
William Timothy Crotty, 80, of Falmouth, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a tobacco and beef cattle farmer and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Falmouth, the church Holy Name Society, the National Farmers Organization and United Kentucky Bank of Pendleton County.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen Cavanaugh Crotty; sons, Timothy Crotty of Loveland, Ohio, James Crotty of Crittenden, Martin Crotty and Kerry Crotty, both of Falmouth; daughters, Ellin Crotty of Dayton, Ohio, and Chrysteen Graf of Williamsburg, Ohio; a brother, Patrick Crotty of Crestview Hills; sisters, Collette Daugherty of Fort Mitchell and Julie Landry of Arlington, Texas; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Church, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Falmouth.

Carlos F. "Frank" Fornash Jr., of Pickerington, Ohio, formerly of Falmouth, died Tuesday at a brother's home. He was a member of Roanoke Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, two daughters, his mother, five brothers, four sisters and numerous grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Short Creek Cemetery, Falmouth.

Louella Margaret Forsee, 99, of Owenton, died Saturday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton.
She was a teacher for more than 50 years and a member of Owenton First Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the junior Sunday school department at the church, and also served as the church clerk.
She was a past president of Owen County Retired Teachers Association, and a member of national, Kentucky and Indiana retired teachers associations, Owen County Historical Society and John Lillard Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a Junior Red Cross chairwoman for many years.
Survivors include a great-nephew, John R. "Jackie" Forsee of Owenton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Owenton First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Ruth Ramsey Landrum, 93, of Williamstown, died Friday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown.
She was a retired teacher with the Grant County Board of Education and owner of Landrum's Dry Good Store in Dry Ridge.
She was a member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. Her husband, George W. Landrum, died in 1975.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Charles Alexander Lawrence, 62, of Crittenden, died Friday at his home.
He was a former security guard with Equitable Bag Co., Florence, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include a brother, Burrell Lawrence of Crittenden; and sisters, Fredi McClure of Mount Zion, Virginia Chapman of Walton, Brenda Fay of Taylor Mill, and Iva Baxter and Thelma Connelly, both of Crittenden.
Services were this morning at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Burial will be in Goshen Christian Church Cemetery, Piner.

Maud Elizabeth Meyer, 90, of Latonia, died at 3:40 p.m. Saturday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia.
She was a retired clerk with Pogue's and Shillito's department stores and Crosley Radio Co. Her husband, Joseph H. Meyer, died in 1982.
Survivors include daughters, Julia Aker of Florence and Mary Lynn Gregg of Taylor Mill; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

George C. Pierce, 70, of Union, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired truck driver with Shur-Good Biscuit Co.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Traft Pierce; sons, Steve Pierce of Hebron, Brian Pierce of Walton and Kevin Pierce of Florence; daughters, Connie Luers of Amelia, Ohio, and Amy Stacey of Verona; a brother, Ronald Ewing of Bellevue; a sister, Kathleen Mueller of Cold Spring; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
No services are planned. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati.

Joseph A. Schaffeld, 39, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Eleanor Seay, 96, of Newport, died Friday at Ivy Woods Care Center in Cincinnati.
She was a nurse's assistant and a member of Corinthian Baptist Church, Newport, where she was a member of the church choir and the usher board. Her husband, Rufus Seay, and a son, A. D. McClain, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a grandson, Doug Speaks, and one great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.
David Sullinger, 87, of Crescent Springs, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a former district manager with B. F. Goodrich. His wife, Clara Sullinger, and a son, David Sullinger, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Steven Sullinger of Yardville, N.J., Stanley Sullinger of Knoxville, Tenn., Daniel Sullinger of Louisville and Mark Sullinger of Crescent Springs; daughters, Clara Lutz of Crescent Springs and Sharon Kilburn of Elsmere; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Raymond Carl Teegarden, 75, of Florence, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights.
He was a retired employee of Isowal Corp. in Florence and of Pharo Trucking Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Remley Teegarden; daughters, Bonnie Ann Marsh of Elsmere, Deborah Jewel Furnier of Florence and Charlene Joan Prescott of Burlington; a son, Stephen Ray Teegarden of Florence; a brother, Walter Teegarden of Florida; and 10 grandchildren.

George M. Waite, 76, of Florence, died at 2:22 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
He was a retired troubleshooter at Cincinnati Gas and Electric Co., a past president of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local No. 1346, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Smith Waite; a daughter, Donna Slayback of Union; sons, Robin Mains of Cold Spring and Mark Mains of Florence; and nine grandchildren.

Theresa Coughlin Ware, 85, of Maysville, died at 4:16 a.m. Sunday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville. Her husband, Scott Ware, died in 1999.
Survivors include a son, Scott E. Ware of Cincinnati; a brother, Thomas Coughlin of Augusta; a sister, Cecilia Case of Augusta; and two grandchildren.
