Flora Cornett, Teacher of the Year
Flora Riddle Cornett spent more than 30 years teaching youngsters from rural southeastern Kentucky to inner-city Cincinnati. Over all that time in all those places, one grade stood out above the rest as her absolute favorite.
"She always said she loved to teach third grade, " said her son, Ted Bundy. "I guess it's a transition grade. That's when she thought learning really started accelerating."
Mrs. Cornett, 91, of Latonia, died Monday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia.
She was awarded Teacher of the Year when she retired from the Cincinnati Public School system in the early 1970s. She had spent 21 years teaching third-grade students at William Howard Taft Elementary School in Mount Auburn.
Before that, she taught for 10 years in Perry County schools where the family had originally lived - at least for three seasons of the year.
Mr. Bundy said he, a brother and his mother had spent numerous summers on the campus of Georgetown College where Flora Cornett was earning her teaching degree.
"We would go to Georgetown every summer, " he recalled. "There were a lot of families living there during the summer. And we lived there with her all summer. It was great. We saw the same kids every summer."
